Crystal Palace manager Patrick Vieira revealed he will look to use last year's victory over Manchester City to achieve similar success when the Eagles face Liverpool on Monday night.

A 2-0 defeat to Arsenal to open their season saw Palace play a poor first half with Gabriel Martinelli opening the scoring before an own goal by Marc Guehi five minutes from time consigned them to defeat.

Keys to getting a result against Liverpool

Last season, the Eagles managed a shock 2-0 victory over City with Wilfred Zaha and Conor Gallagher providing the goals and Vieira will look to that match as a template for Monday's clash.

"The game against City we were well-disciplined, well-organized and we defended well as a team", he said. "We managed to frustrate them until the kind of moment when we could score that goal."

He described in further detail what it will take to defeat the Reds and pick up their first victory of the new Premier League season.

"It's about our organization, how we can be really disciplined, work well and close those kinds of spaces where they can hurt you. If we do that well, it will be important for us to be brave and to take those chances."

Team news ahead of trip to Anfield

Vieira provided an update on key players for Monday's game against the Reds, specifically the status of forward Michael Olise.

"Michael trained all week with the team, so there is a chance that he will be with the squad", he stated.

"The other two (James McArthur and James Tomkins) it will be too short for them."

The Palace boss also revealed that Nathan Ferguson "just had a setback. It's too early to talk about, but obviously, he didn't train in the last couple of days with the team."

Taking chances key for Eagles

One of the biggest frustrations for Vieira in the defeat to Arsenal was the lack of quality finishing and he hopes Palace will improve upon that on Monday.

"Against those kinds of teams, it's about taking chances", he said. "We have to perform well out of position, we have to accept that during the 90 minutes we will have difficult periods."

He added that "we know we have the players to do well going forward but the other side of the game is defending well as a team and working hard not to concede a goal. We have to take those chances."
