Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers was frustrated with the way his side performed after The Foxes crashed out of the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United.

Newcastle comfortable secured their place in the semi final of the Carabao Cup after second half goals from Dan Burn and Joelinton which put The Foxes to the sword.

When speaking to BBC Radio Leicester after the game, Rodgers admitted that 'the best team won' and that his side 'didn't play well enough.'

A disappointing day for The Foxes

It was a tough night for Leicester at St James' Park against a high-flying Newcastle side.

After full time, Rodgers said he could have no complaints about his side's exit from the competition.

He said: "I think that clearly it was disappointing but the best team won. We had to weather the storm early on and Wardy [Danny Ward] made a couple of good saves.

"We had a few chances in the game but we didn't play well enough.

"When you come to these stadiums - we've been here over the last few years and played really well and won the game and passed the ball - but today we didn't do that.

"There was lots of effort and lots of commitment but we weren't clean enough with our passing to create opportunities and disappointingly we conceded two cheap goals."

Rodgers felt that the goals Leicester let in were avoidable and said his team needed to defend better in and around their own box.

He added: "The first goal you've got to defend it. You can't play in the corner if there's not a pass on. No matter what team, you've got to defend it. We tried to be to clever and then we gave it away and Dan Burn scores.

"The other one just comes from a basic throw in and Joelinton's pace gets him in behind so that was disappointing.

"There's no embarrassment in coming here and losing but we just weren't good enough.

"Newcastle were much better and you have to respect that and now we prepare for a big game at the weekend."

'The Club are continuing talks with players that we want to get in.'

One of the biggest concerns for Leicester fans has been their lack of activity in the transfer market and Rodgers was again asked about this after the game.

The Northern Irishman was adamant that the Club were working hard behind the scenes and that things were progressing, but he could not give any timeline around how soon any new signings could arrive.

Rodgers said: "The Club are continuing talks with players that we want to get in and that's the latest that I knew this morning. After that I was really just focussed on the game here.

"I don't [have a timeline on new signings]. I think as soon as the club bring them in then we will announce them.

"Until then we will work with the players we have and get them right after tonight.

"We will be disappointed of course but we have to keep fighting and keep working."

'We played well in the home game against them [Forest] so now we need to pick ourselves up for the away game.'

After disappointment in the Carabao Cup, Leicester's next game is away at local rivals Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

In October, Leicester ended an extremely poor run of form by beating Forest 4-0 and Rodgers was asked if it was the perfect game for his team to bounce back.

He said: "At the moment any game [is good]. It doesn't have to be a derby game.

"We go into every game with a mentality to win and a commitment to win.

"We played very well in the home game against them and now we have to pick ourselves up and take that mentality into the away game.

"It's going to be a tough game, it's a tough place to go - we saw that last season- and we have to be aggressive and be ready for the fights and do the dirty stuff, and then we have to be able to play and that was the disappointment tonight.

"We worked hard enough and the effort was there, but we didn't play quick enough, but hopefully we can do that at the weekend."
