Christian Benteke's second-half winner ensured that Liverpool took all three points against Leicester City on Boxing Day, becoming only the second team to beat the Foxes this season, thanks to a 1-0 win.

Looking like the better team from the outset, Jürgen Klopp's men may have been ahead sooner had Divock Origi not gone off injured, but his replacement Benteke clinched all the three points with a goal himself, despite missing some good chances either side of his opener.

Leicester did have opportunities themselves, but the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez weren't quite up to their usual standards, with that pair substituted before full-time.

Changes aid Liverpool's positive start

Making three changes to the team that lost to Watford last week, with Simon Mignolet, Origi and Dejan Lovren in for Adam Bogdan, Lucas and Martin Skrtel, Klopp would have been pleased to see the start his side made to the game.

Philippe Coutinho was his usual self, looking to score from range, and the Brazilian lit the touchpaper for Liverpool's dominant attacking by shooting narrowly wide in the opening few minutes.

Emre Can forced goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel into a good save with a powerful shot from distance, whilst Adam Lallana and Origi came close to opening the scoring, before the latter was unfortunately forced off.

Origi injury halts dominance

Hamstring injuries are so common in the festive period when so many games are played, and Origi was the unlucky one this time around, sent straight down the tunnel after pulling up following an extremely bright start to the game.

The Reds failed to keep their impressive play up for a period after Benteke came on, with that admittedly not the frontman's fault, given that he'd had little chance to warm up. Leicester looked to take advantage of this, and Mahrez forced Mignolet into a good save before the half was out.

There were nervous rumblings around Anfield as the game continued, even though the hosts continued to create chances, with Benteke heading over from Jordan Henderson's fine ball into the box. All of that pressure was relieved though, when the Belgian opened the scoring just past the hour mark.

Benteke makes it 1-0 with fine finish

A fine low cross from Roberto Firmino picked Benteke out on the edge of the area, and he made no mistake in angling a first time effort into the bottom right hand corner, giving Liverpool fans some much needed festive cheer following some disappointing recent results.

With Vardy and Mahrez taken off, it was time for the direct stuff from Leicester, as Christian Fuchs sent an assault of long throws towards the Liverpool goal, causing distress in the home defence. One particular throw nearly allowed towering centre-back Robert Huth to scrape home an equaliser, but Mignolet was first to the ball with some fine goalkeeping.

Henderson and Coutinho both could have made it 2-0 with chances in the final period, and Benteke certainly should have. With Schmeichel having gone up for a throw, the Reds countered, leaving just a defender between Benteke and an open goal, but the Belgian saw his effort blocked.

It didn't matter though, as Klopp's men hung on for a dearly needed 1-0 win, taking them up to eighth, now only two points from sixth.
