As Jon Flanagan nears a full return to fitness after playing 105 minutes against Stoke City last week, is the fiesty defender in line to take Alberto Moreno's coveted left-back position?

The Spaniard signed from La Liga side Sevilla for £12 million with the significance of solving the positional worries of the left side of defence for years to come, but has been inconsistent throughout his time at Anfield and has cost Liverpool severely on multiple occasions.

Flanagan is a fan favourite on Merseyside and after retuning from an injury nightmare spanning 616 days - the crowd erupted in applause as the Liverpool-born defender step foot on the hallowed Anfield pitch last week.

With Jürgen Klopp's side nearing a full recovery from an injury-plagued season, it might be time to re-evaluate the players at the club - starting with the contentious left back spot.

Move over Moreno?

The left side of defence was made Moreno's his own this season due to a lack of existing competition. Fellow Spaniard Jose Enrique was frozen out in his last two seasons under Brendan Rodgers and has only slightly been brought back into the fold by Klopp, whilst there are few other options.

The former Europa League winner has managed to piece together a bold plan for keeping his position - attack, attack attack! The 23-year-old has created more chances for his side (43) than any other teammate which stands as a rather startling fact, but it covers up some of the other issues he has.

With Liverpool struggling for goals this season it may be in their best interest keep the former Sevilla player in his position and give him a nudge towards his defensive duties.

However, with two defensive errors to his name this season, Moreno will have to pay more attention to his positioning or risk being dropped with the Reds currently in the midst of a defensive crisis after conceding nine goals in their past four games.

Flanagan the man?

In the 'Scouse Cafu', fans already know the type of game that the player will bring - an aggressive challenge followed by a humble return to his position. The 23-year-old may arguably be the last remaining 'no-nonsense' defender at the club.

After over 600 days out through injury Flanagan returned to a standing ovation against Exeter City in the FA Cup, it could figure as one of Liverpool's most emotional moments in recent seasons, but the full-back shrugged off the sentiment with his focus fixed on football.

With an impressive recent showing against Stoke in the League Cup, the Scouser may have done enough to impress Klopp as the German hailed him as "incredible" afterwards. After featuring for over 100 minutes in an exhausting battle, he was substituted to a second ovation from the crowd.

The No.38's contract is running out with just six months remaining, but Flanagan will want to get minutes under his belt and fast if he is to secure a new deal. He has made just two appeareances this season, in addition to his career total of 44, though given the lack of cover at full-back and his versatility to play on either side, games are certainly there for the taking.

Possessing the ability to drive forward as well as accurately performing a slide challenge and defend capably is a juggling of skills that most players have not acquired but the one-cap England international has these kind of talents in abundence and will surely be given a deserved opportunity to push for a permanent place in the side, once his fitness returns to its peak.
