Jordi Amat has signed a one-year extension on his Swansea City contract.

Amat only signed a new deal at the club last March, but now he has added to his stay in South Wales, with this extension meaning he will remain at the Liberty Stadium until the summer of 2019.

The defender has been out-of-favour this season, third choice in the central defensive position behind preferred duo Federico Fernandez and captain Ashley Williams, but he recognises that his role remains important in the team as they bid to stay up.

Amat thrilled

Speaking to Swansea's official website, Amat discussed his delight with the extension as he looks to help the Swans avoid the drop.

The defender described it as "great news" that's he has "sign[ed] a new extension," thanking "the chairman and the club" for their "trust in him" - for which he is "grateful for."

Amat joined Swansea in 2013 from Espanyol, signing a four-year deal. 47 appearances and two one-year extensions later, the now 23-year-old says he is "happy" to stay in Wales for another three years, having enjoyed his time so far.

"This is my home. I am happy here and my family is too.”

Recent confidence boost

Whilst Amat has not been involved as much this season, making just three appearances in the Premier League and two in the cups, the defender is happy to play a smaller role for the team if it helps them.

"Everyone wants to play in every game," he said, "but I am here and ready for the team whenever I'm needed."

A lack of chances haven't decreased his determination at all either, with Amat saying he is "always trying [his] best" both in training and games, hopeful of being able to "play a part."

Two of the defender's three league appearances have come with new manager Francesco Guidolin in the dugout, even though both have been off the bench late on.

He is happy that the "big change" has given him "an opportunity...to be involved" too and believes the Italian is "the right man to take [Swansea] forward."

The last two wins have been a real lift, and we want to continue that good run."

Swansea's next two games given them a real chance to maintain their form as well, with West Bromwich Albion coming up on Tuesday and Crystal Palace following on Saturday in a couple of very winnable fixtures.
