After netting the opening goal for Liverpool in the first-leg of his side's last-16 Europa League tie last Thursday, Daniel Sturridge is aiming to finish the job off in style with a win at Old Trafford this week.

After missing the Reds' victories over Manchester City and Crystal Palace in the league, Sturridge marked his return to the side with a well-taken penalty against Manchester United after Nathaniel Clyne was brought down by Memphis Depay

And Roberto Firmino's second-half strike means Liverpool travel to the home of their old rivals with a two-goal advantage, with one goal enough to mean United need four to progress.

Sturridge says Reds travel to United looking for win

The Liverpool striker is keen to take the positives from that result and says they will attempt to replicate the same type of performance in the second-leg, insisting they won't be sitting back.

"We’ll approach the second leg exactly the same as we did the first leg. That’s the only way we know," Sturridge told the Liverpool Echo.

He explained that "the Liverpool way" is to go out and try "to win games" and said that they will therefore "be positive" in the second-leg because "the confidence is there within the camp" and the entire team are "just looking forward to every game."

The striker added: "We are mentally prepared for every job we have ahead of us."

Striker hoping Reds can take more of their chances

Liverpool could easily have been further out of sight if it hadn’t been for the brilliant David De Gea. The Spanish goalkeeper was in fine form and produced a couple of great saves to deny Liverpool an advantage which could have put the game beyond United by the time of the return tie.

Sturridge of course got the better of him when it came to the penalty but knows that De Gea possesses great quality and will be difficult to beat come Thursday.

He called the United shotstopper "a world class goalkeeper" and acknowledged that goalkeepers can have "fantastic games" which he "seems to be doing" often.

"He has kept us out a few times," Sturridge admitted, before insisting that they can hopefully "be able to put a few more of the chances away" next time out to ensure their progression to the quarter finals.

First-leg win a good stepping stone, but job not done, warns Sturridge

The win at Anfield ended a run of four consecutive defeats against the Manchester club and the England international was impressed with the Reds manner of victory.

Liverpool’s No.15 was also full of praise for Brazilian teammate Roberto Firmino, as he continued his brilliant run of form since the turn of the year with another goal.

Asked if the win avenged their previous losses to United, Sturridge dismissed that it was "about revenge" but said it was "an important result" and it was "especially" important "to get a clean sheet" which he said was their focus.

He continued: "Firmino has been doing extremely well and hopefully that will continue."

Despite the convincing manner of the 2-0 victory, Sturridge was, however, quick to point out that the tie is not over in the slightest. But he thinks the magnitude of such an important victory bodes well for the side looking forwards.

"It was a good step for us, but it is only the first leg. It is half a job," he declared, saying that the Liverpool team are "just looking at the second-leg" in order to "get the job done."

He added: "For the team’s development it was great for us to win a game 2-0 against a top side. But as I said it is half a job."

Sturridge said they have "a big game again" for the second-leg which they have to be "mentally prepared" for so that they can "get the job done" and reach the next round.
