The treble winning defender was impressed with United's transfer window, especially with record transfer Pogba.

Former Manchester United defender Jaap Stam believes that Paul Pogba's world record transfer fee was worth it due to the skill and ability of the midfielder.

In what was arguably one of the most discussed transfers of the summer window, United finally brought Pogba back to Old Trafford from Juventus for a fee reported to be around £94.3m.

The France international left the Red Devils on a free transfer in the summer of 2012, but Stam, who is currently manager of Reading, understands why the eventual transfer figure was so high:

"He is a quality player. He's shown that in Italy. If there is a big club interested in a certain player like that you know that Juventus are going to ask for a lot of money."

Pogba established himself as one of Europe's best midfielders during his four seasons in Turin, and at the age of just 23, has already become a regular starter for the French national team.

Clubs will spend if they can

As a manager, Stam knows what it is like if a manager has access to such funds, just like Jose Mourinho has shown in his first transfer window and United boss:

"But if a manager at a club that has the money wants to spend it, then they are going to spend it. That's how the market is."

Biggest Manchester derby ever?

Mourinho and his side go head-to-head with bitter rivals, Manchester City on Saturday afternoon in the first Manchester derby of the season.

Both Manchester clubs have made a 100% start to the league season picking up a total of nine points from three games.

Pogba has featured in the last two league games for United, but has yet to get off the mark with a goal or an assist, but will be looking to help United to another three points at the weekend.
