When it comes to transfer windows Manchester United are always going to be linked with a whole host of names, it is just the nature of the game.

Often it could just be a way for websites to gain more clicks or in other cases it could be the respective players' current clubs namedropping Man United to drum up interest in their players. However, amongst the  multitude of transfer rumours, there is the odd report worth noting from the more reputable sources.

The latest name on the rumour mill comes in the form of a potential left-back option, Real Madrid's Sergio Reguilón, although it still remains to be seen whether or not Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will look to strengthen the left-back position.

Despite already having Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams in the first team and the fact that perhaps other positions are of higher importance in this summer's market, United boss Solskjaer may want to upgrade at left-back with the hopes of mounting a title challenge.

With that being said, if the latest reports ring true, they are not to be sniffed at.

Here we go?

Tier 1 journalist Fabrizio Romano has shed light on Reguilón's situation in the Spanish capital having returned from a season-long loan at Sevilla, stating that Zinedine Zidane has deemed the Spain International surplus to requirements with the player subsequently being offered to United.

At this moment in time talks are continuing with United reported by several news outlets to be willing to part with £30 million for Reguilón, but talks are being held up by Real Madrid insisting on a buy-back clause in any potential transfer.

If the Red Devils do manage to get a deal for the 23-year old over the line, he will improve the squad for a number of reasons.

For the majority of the 2019/20 season the jury was out on Shaw with the former England player failing to put together a run of consistent performances and looked rather hesitant when asked to get forward and support the attack. As a result, he lost his place in the team to Williams in what was the youngsters breakout season in the red shirt.

Williams instantly impressed and proved his doubters wrong when showing he could perform week in week out and go toe-to-toe with a senior player for a starting place. However, post-lockdown Williams was replaced by Shaw and struggled to bounce back as Shaw was near perfect.

Despite a strong end to the season for Shaw and the rise of Williams, questions still remain over the left-back slot and for that reason, Solskjaer should not take Real Madrid's offer lightly.

If you look at most full-backs in the modern game they have the ability to get forward and bolster the attack and as good as former Southampton man Shaw is defensively, he is massively lacking when it comes to attack.

Reguilón on the other hand did not take long to impress viewers in both La Liga and the Europa League this season with his attacking capabilities and there is no doubt he would be a welcomed addition at Old Trafford.

Room for three left-backs

The signing of Reguilón would not spell the end at United for either Shaw or Williams though as the former could be shifted to left centre-back where he has previously impressed and with the latter still being just 20 years of age, the new addition would allow him to keep his place in the squad whilst continuing his progression.

This deal is by no means guaranteed, but if Ed Woodward and Co could wrap up a deal for Reguilón, the Spaniard alongside new signing Donny van de Beek and the potential arrival of Jadon Sancho, could transform this side into title contenders.

The transfer window closes on 5 October allowing just over three weeks to further improve the squad.
