Ipswich Town will welcome Milton Keynes Dons to Portman Road on Saturday afternoon as two of League One's promotion favourites go head-to-head.

The two sides had the highest possession count in the division last term, and already both lead the charts again after two matches of this season.

Ipswich will look to build on last weekend's victory at Forest Green Rovers which has seen them claim four points from their opening two league fixtures this campaign.

MK Dons, meanwhile, will be looking to claim their first points of the season after a slow start which has seen them lose consecutive league matches without scoring.

The Dons did register a victory in midweek, beating Sutton United in the Carabao Cup to set up a tie with Championship side Watford.

Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna has been relatively pleased with the start his side have made and is looking to take each match as it comes.

The Northern Irishman said: "It’s game-by-game trying to get three points. We had to accept a point against Bolton but got three last week. It’s not about tallies, it’s about fighting for maximum points every week.”

McKenna believes his side are heading in the right direction and will be looking to get three points on the board on Saturday.

The threats that MK Dons possess, though, is something the Town boss is more than aware of.

"There has obviously been quite a bit of change there but you can see they are a very well-coached football team where everyone knows their roles and their identity is clear," he said.

"I think they are going to be a strong side again and a very similar challenge to what we faced last year."

Saturday will mark one year to the day since Liam Manning became MK Dons head coach as he returns to the side where he played as a youngster and began his career in coaching.

However, Manning is fully aware of the task at hand and knows there is no room for sentiment.

He said: "I have really good memories at what is a terrific football club. Ultimately I'm not going back there to enjoy it, I'm going back there to win the game."

Manning acknowledged the step-up from playing Sutton to Ipswich, expecting a tough match but also wanting his players to embrace the occasion.

He added: "It's a game that you want to play in, that's what you want to test yourself against. We want to go there and put in a performance and show what we are capable of.

"We're quite clear in what we are about and they are as well, so hopefully it will be a good game."

Team news

Ipswich Town

Ipswich made 10 changes for the midweek defeat to Colchester United and will switch back to a similar side that beat Forest Green a week ago.

Tyreece John-Jules and Kayden Jackson are unlikely to have done enough to break into the starting lineup for Saturday, with Town's forwards failing to convert numerous chances against the U's.

Summer signing Dominic Ball will not be available to make his debut for Saturday's game as the midfielder continues to recover from an ankle injury picked up in pre-season.

McKenna said: "Unfortunately, he's not been able to make the last step yet. It’s one of those high ankle sprains which, unfortunately, are minor but can take extra time to be close enough to 100 per cent for us to be happy enough to put him in a match."

Veteran defender Richard Keogh became the club's latest recruit on Wednesday. The 36-year-old, who recently had a spell at MK Dons, could come into the squad for the first time this weekend.

The Town boss added: "He’s settled in very well, exactly as we would expect. He’s trained in two sessions and you can see straight away the quality he has and the habits which have helped him have such a successful career.

"Richard is a fantastic addition."

Keogh's arrival is likely to pave the way for young defender Corrie Ndaba to head out on a fifth loan spell away from the club before the end of the month.

Ndaba has been managing a hip flexor issue and won't be involved this weekend.

Milton Keynes Dons

MK Dons made seven changes for the cup match in midweek but are also all but certain to revert to a similar side that has played the opening two league fixtures.

Dean Lewington is set to make his 771st league appearance, which will enter the defender into the top 10 all-time appearance makers in English football.

The Dons look set to be without six players for the trip to Ipswich, with Nathan Holland and Will Grigg the latest to suffer injury setbacks.

Both went off in last weekend's match with Sheffield Wednesday.

On the injury front, Manning said: "It's not ideal, it's a challenge. But at the same point, it provides an opportunity for other players in the squad to grab the shirt and own the position."

On Grigg in particular, Manning added: "We're expecting him back soon, it's definitely not a major one. It's more precaution than anything, we're looking after him."

Grigg's absence leaves Matthew Dennis as the only recognised striker and is set to lead the line for Manning's side this weekend.

Liam Sweeting, the Dons' Sporting Director, says that they will not be rushed into the transfer market for a striker, but are exploring the market.

Mo Eisa, Daniel Harvie, Tennai Watson and Josh McEachran all remain out.

Likely lineups

Ipswich Town (3-4-2-1): Walton; Edmundson, Woolfenden, Donacien; Davis, Morsy (c), Evans, Burns; Harness, Chaplin; Ladapo.

Milton Keynes Dons (4-2-3-1): Cumming; Lewington (c), Tucker, O'Hora, Oyegoke; Robson, Johnson; Grant, Smith, Barry; Dennis.

Key players

Sam Morsy

Ipswich captain Sam Morsy has been influential since his deadline day move to the club from Middlesbrough last summer.

He has started this season as he ended the last and provides the Tractor Boys with grit and energy in midfield alongside Lee Evans.

Goals are something the Egyptian was keen to add to his game this season and got off the mark with an excellent strike in last weekend's victory at Forest Green Rovers.

Conor Grant

Irish youth international Conor Grant has impressed since joining the Dons from Rochdale in the summer, scoring his first goal for the club in the midweek victory over Sutton United.

The 21-year-old was a regular feature for the Dale in League Two last season, scoring four goals and providing four assists from a variety of attacking positions behind the centre-forward.

With MK Dons carrying some injury concerns, Grant will hope to showcase why he is worthy of a key role in the side.

Form guide

Ipswich will look to put Tuesday's Carabao Cup defeat behind them and continue with their solid start to the league campaign.

The Blues have lost just two of their last 19 league matches across this season and last and have only conceded multiple goals in a match once since January.

Town's home form has been impressive under McKenna, losing just one of his 12 league matches in Suffolk since taking over in December last year.

Meanwhile, the visitors will hope their midweek cup victory over Sutton can kickstart a league campaign that has got off to a slow start.

The Dons have lost both of their opening two fixtures 1-0 as they find themselves 23rd in the League One table.

Of course, the table means absolutely nothing at this stage of the season.

Head-to-head

The last four meetings between the sides have all ended in draws, while Ipswich had won the previous three meetings.

Last season's fixture at Portman Road a year ago saw MK Dons come from behind twice to claim a 2-2 draw. None of the scorers that day will feature here, as Scott Twine and Matt O'Riley goals cancelled out a brace from then-Ipswich loanee Macauley Bonne.

MK Dons have never beaten Ipswich in 90 minutes, with the Dons' only success over the Tractor Boys coming on penalties in the League Cup in 2007. This was the first ever meeting between the sides.
