Middlesbrough were tipped to be promotion contenders by many before the season started, but after only picking up three points from their opening four games, a win is a must as they travel to Reading this weekend.

In midweek, Reading pulled out arguably one of the best performances in the league so far as they beat Blackburn Rovers 3-0, who had won every game this season up until that point.

Middlesbrough however drew 2-2 away at Stoke City, and almost got their first three points of the season, but conceded an injury time equaliser. So Boro will be eager to bounce back on Saturday afternoon.

Team news

Reading

The Royals will be thrilled to have welcomed back Lucas Joao midweek, with Joao coming off the bench and scoring within eight minutes of coming on. He could make his first start of the season in place of Shane Long, giving him a rest.

Middlesbrough

Boro will be hoping to have Chuba Akpom return to the side after he was omitted from the squad midweek after he twisted his knee last weekend against Sheffield United. Josh Coburn is still sidelined with a knee injury he suffered on the first game of the season.

Likely lineups

Reading:

Bouzanis; Yiadom, Holmes, McIntyre, Hoilett, Guinness-Walker, Fornah, Loum, Ince, Hendrick, Joao.

Middlesbrough:

Steffen; Dijksteel, Lenihan, Bola, Jones, Giles, McNair, Howson, Mowatt, McGree, Akpom.

Key players

Mamadou Loum

The Senegalese international has been Reading's best player this season, bossing the midfield alongside fellow loanee Tyrese Fornah. Reading's attacking players like Ovie Ejaria and Yakou Meite will be licking their lips at the prospect of playing in front of Loum.

 Isaiah Jones

The 23-year-old has started the season well continuing his from from last year, already claiming a goal and two assists. His dribbling ability, his high number of recoveries and sheer pace make him a danger any left-back in the Championship coming up against him.
