Substitute Ryan Hardie scored twice in the final 20 minutes to give Plymouth Argyle an enthralling 4-2 victory over Exeter City at Home Park in front of the Sky Sports cameras.

Archie Collins put the Grecians ahead, finishing from close range, but Morgan Whittaker equalised just two minutes later.

Sam Nombe restored Exeter's lead seven minutes after halftime, but a long-range strike from Bali Mumba hauled the Pilgrims level a second time.

Hardie gave Plymouth their first lead with 20 minutes to go before taking a pass from Whittaker and calmly finishing to give the green side of Devon bragging rights.

The result sees Plymouth extend their lead at the top of the EFL League One table to four points with a ninth straight home win while Exeter are 10th.

Story of the match

Plymouth manager Steven Schumacher made five changes to the side that defeated Shrewsbury Town last week with Dan Scarr, Joe Edwards, Niall Ennis, Sam Cosgrove and Brendan Galloway coming in for Hardie, Finn Azaz, Matt Butcher, Nigel Lonwijk and Conor Grant.

Gary Caldwell made one change to the side that played out a goalless draw with Derby as Harry Kite came in for Jevani Brown in the midfield.

It was Exeter that had the first chance of the match, Jay Stansfield weaving through the box for a shot that was blocked by the legs of Scarr.

The Pilgrims were nearly caught out when a tricky cross by Jack Sparkes was nodded goalwards by Nombe, but goalkeeper Mike Cooper made a routine save.

Mumba made a weaving run which was tipped over by Grecians shot-stopper Jamal Blackman. The subsequent corner by Jordan Houghton was sent to Whittaker, but his volley was high.

On 25 minutes, the visitors took the lead. Kite found Stansfield down the left and his low cross across the six-yard box left Collins with the simplest of tap-ins.

The lead lasted just 90 seconds as Mumba won the ball on the left, passed it back to Adam Randell and he clipped it to Whittaker and after one touch, beat Blackman into the bottom corner.

Nombe and Jake Caprice played a neat one-two with the former sending in a cross for the latter that was put out for a corner. Cooper cleared the first corner and the second was taken care of by the Plymouth defense.

James Wilson had the first chance of the second half from a corner, but with acres of space in the area, his strike sailed over the bar.

Against the run of play, the visitors went in front. An error in the back allowed Stansfield to pinch possession and an inch-perfect through ball found Nombe, who rounded Cooper and scored into the empty net.

The lively Mumba made it 2-2 after Exeter cleared a corner to him and from 30 yards away, he took one touch and his low strike swerved through the wind before settling into the bottom corner.

An inspired change

Schumacher then made what turned out to be the game-changing substitution, bringing in Hardie for Ennis.

Caldwell then made a double change as Cheick Diabate and Brown came on for Caprice and Tim Dieng.

Mumba then saw his cross cleared by Pierce Sweeney.

Cooper  had to be alert to palm away a curling shot by Collins and a minute later, the hosts went in front.

Houghton won the ball in midfield and found Whittaker, who picked out Hardie in the box and after taking a touch, blasted one into the roof of the net.

Five minutes later, Kite came close to leveling for a third time, skimming the bar with a sumptuous long-range strike. He was then subbed out for Matt Jay.

With six minutes to go, Whittaker played a through ball to Hardie, who steered a composed finish beyond the advancing Blackman to cap off an instant classic.

Player of the match: Ryan Hardie

His introduction changed the course of the game, getting great service and showing wonderful composure, especially on the second goal, to seal all three points in this Devon derby classic.
