Plymouth and Peterborough United begin their Carabao Cup conquests at Home Park, before facing each other again in the League just three days later.

The Pilgrims upset then-Championship Peterborough at this stage last season, Ryan Hardie scoring twice at the Weston Homes Stadium in a big 0-4 win.

With The Posh back in League One, these two promotion rivals will want to get the one-up on the other at this early stage of the season.

Plymouth are set to make a number of changes after manager Steven Schumacher admitted he would “definitely make a few changes” for Wednesday’s game.

Callum Burton could feature for the first time this season in goal, while loanee Nigel Lonwijk could make his maiden appearance after joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers for the season.

Jordan Houghton made his season debut in the defeat at Fleetwood Town and he is set to come into the starting 11, but Hardie is set to keep out Niall Ennis up front.

The Posh look to make it past the first round for the first time since the 2016/17 season and they could make a host of changes themselves with one eye on the game at the weekend.

Harvey Cartwright will not be risked, as is the same with Kwame Poku, with the latter not even having travelled to the south coast.

Grant McCann will not take a chance on Nathan Thompson so could hand a start to under-21 right back Benjamin Mensah.

Jeando Fuchs missed the weekend’s win at home to Morecambe with an injury so Hector Kyprianou could keep his place in midfield after his man of the match performance.

Summer signing David Ajiboye could also be in line to make an appearance after being an unused substitute at the weekend.

  • Potential line-ups

Plymouth

Burton; Lonwijk, Scarr, Gillesphey; Edwards, Houghton, Butcher, Galloway, Mayor, Jephcott, Ennis.

Peterborough United

Bergstrom; Mensah, Fernandez, Kent, Tomlinson; Kyprianou, Taylor; Randall, Jade-Jones, Burrows; Marriott.

  • Key players

Plymouth – Ryan Hardie

The striker got his first goal of the season in the Fleetwood defeat, and is hoping that kickstarts his campaign.

Hardie found the back of the net 19 times in all competitions last season and caused plenty of problems.

That goalscoring instinct took Plymouth to within inches of the Playoffs last season and earned him links away from Home Park this summer.

His pace is a threat to any defence in League One, and will be looking to exploit a Peterborough back-line that is not quite known for it’s pace.

Hardie can score in any way and will look to get his first from open play this term against The Posh.

Peterborough United – Jack Marriott

One of Peterborough’s gems from the past returned to the club after an injury hit spell at Derby County, only to suffer another long term injury.

However, Marriott is now free of injury and back in the division where he scored 27 goals back in 2017-18 and is looking to restart a once promising career.

He has lost the pace that made him so frightening for defenders but his clinical nature has never left him, as showed by his finish against Cheltenham Town on the opening weekend.

With Jonson Clarke-Harris now the main man up front, Marriott needs to take his chance when he gets it, and a goal-scorer with a point to prove is a dangerous man.

Whether the winner of the cup game affects the league game at the weekend, time can only tell.
