Daniel Sturridge believes Liverpool's relentless performance as they hit Aston Villa for six in a stunning 6-0 win away at Villa Park on Sunday afternoon gives them confidence moving forward.

Jürgen Klopp's side had six different goalscorers for the first time since 1989 as they ran riot against the side at the root of the Barclays Premier League table for an emphatic three points.

Sturridge marked his first league start since October 4 with a goal, taking just 16 minutes to make the breakthrough as he met Philippe Coutinho's pinpoint cross to direct his header past Mark Bunn.

James Milner doubled their lead with a free-kick before Emre Can, Divock Origi, Nathaniel Clyne and Kolo Touré added further goals to seal a memorable afternoon for the Reds.

Striker pleased to have notched first goal of 2016 but says it's more about the team

The No.15, speaking to Sky Sports after full-time, said it was "great" to register such a convincing victory and score his first league goal since the last time the two teams met in September, but declared that it's "more important that the team wins the game."

Having watched regularly from the sidelines, the England international - who will be hoping to string together a run of games ahead of the European Championships in the summer - said that Liverpool "have been unlucky in recent games" and so called it "great to get the result" in the West Midlands and "to score so many goals" which he says gives them "confidence for future games."

Asked how it felt scoring his fifth goal of the season in just his eight game this term, he said it's "more important" to help the team "win the game" whether that's by contributing "assists, goals or making runs" and said "all that matters" is making sure Liverpool win more games.

Milner says Reds' extra training time showed on the pitch

James Milner, whose free-kick evaded everyone to nestle into the bottom corner in the first-half, added that they "needed a win" after "a few disappointments recently", explaining that they've "played well and probably not got what we deserved in games."

"It was important to do our job," the experienced midfielder added, saying that they had "a full week's training and worked very hard" and had "some good sessions" which they "haven't been able to do" because of the amount of games they've had to play.

The vice-captain said that the "tempo from training went into the game" and declared that they were "due one where everything went for us rather than the opposite" but called upon his teammates to "keep doing that" and "build on this result" with "some important games coming up."

Midfielder hoping Reds can use win as a springboard

The 30-year-old said that it's "a good confidence builder" and that "confidence of when we get in those areas and taking those chances like we did today hopefully helps us kick on for the rest of the season."

Despite continuing that it's "pleasing" to win by such a comprehensive margin, he insisted they must keep their focus because they have "a lot of big games coming up" and "want to finish strongly in the league" - saying the Villa win will hopefully give them "a platform to build on for the coming months" which also see them take back up their European commitments and travel to Wembley for the Capital One Cup final.
