Relegation battlers Augsburg hosted European contenders Schalke at the WWK Arena in the early Sunday game, with three points absolutely vital for both teams moving forward.

The hosts began in 16th place with 13 points from 15 games, propped up by only Hoffenheim and Stuttgart in the bottom two. Schalke, meanwhile, sat in 8th position with 24 points tied with Mainz and Leverkusen, knowing a win would bump the up to 6th.

Scrappy opening

Ausburg played in neon green, but their exciting kit didn't match the opening to the game as both struggled to get the match by the scruff.

Caiuby of Augsburg was the man trying to force the issue early on, however he had two shots off target in the 12th and 15th minute.

Feulner went down in the box on the quarter-hour mark howling for a penalty to be awarded by referee Florian Meyer, though it was upon replay a clear dive that Meyer should have punished.

The home side took a crucial 34th minute lead through a piece of fortune. An effort from Dominik Kohr was heading goalwards, but Jeong-Ho Hong deflected the shot and beat Fahrmann as FCA couldn't believe their luck.

Schalke were screaming for an offside decision against Hong, though the appeals were waived away as the home faithful continued to celebrate.

Leroy Sane went about restoring parity instantly as he got a good look but failed to connect with his attempt as the chance went begging.

At half-time it was 1-0 to the hosts in a fairly poor and scrappy match. Markus Weinzierl won't have minded one bit; as things stood his side would leap to 13th, while Andre Breitenreiter will have been demanding a response from the blues.

Five minutes into the second half Leon Goretzka thought he had almost made it 1-1 when he rattled the woodwork, however he was adjudged to be in an offside position anyway providing respite for the FCA back line.

Late drama

Schalke dominated possession but were restricted to mostly long range efforts as the home side, bolstered by Feulner, Hong, Klavan and Max, continued to make life difficult.

The visiting side got their breakthrough in the 70th minute. A pass from Choupo-Moting put the ball in a dangerous position, and Sead Kolasinac scrambled home from close range to send the 3,000 travelling supporters into a frenzy.

However, a first Schalke goal for Kolasinac was not enough to salvage a point as late drama ensued.

Caiuby, a dynamic presence in the first 45 minutes, struck a 90th minute volley straight into the top corner to steal the points for Augsburg, sending them to their first ever win over Schalke.

Schalke stayed in 8th place with the defeat and moved into the negatives in goal difference, while Augsburg temporarily moved to 13th, but with Frankfurt to follow it remained to be seen how long for.
