Ghana and Uruguay face each other in a rematch of their dramatic and controversial World Cup quarterfinal 12 years ago in Group H of the 2022 World Cup.

The Black Stars defeated South Korea in a five-goal thriller in their last group stage match and are in a good position to advance, a win seeing them through while a draw would also be good enough provided the Koreans don't beat group leaders Portugal by four or more goals.

For Uruguay. they are in a much more precarious position. La Celeste have picked up just one point from their opening two fixtures and have yet to score and they must win this match and hope Portugal beat South Korea while a draw would see it come down to goal difference.

The 2010 quarterfinal contested in Johannesburg is still talked about to this day as the match seemed to be headed for penalties after a 1-1 scoreline through 120 minutes of normal and extra time, but Luis Suarez committed a handball and was sent off near the end of extra time.

Asamoah Gyan stepped up and smashed his penalty against the crossbar and Uruguay would advance to the semifinals after winning the subsequent penalty shootout 4-2, denying the Black Stars a place in history as the first African team to reach the last four.

Likely line-ups

Ghana: Ati-Zigi; Mensah, Salisu, Amartey, Lamptey; Samed, Partey; J. Ayew, A. Ayew, Kudus; Williams

Uruguay: Rochet; Coates, Godin, Giménez; Olivera, Vecino, Bentancur, Valverde, Varela; Cavani, Núñez

Key players

Mohammed Kudus (Ghana)

He scored in the win over South Korea and is one of the brightest young talents in world soccer as the 22-year old adds a cutting edge to the Black Stars attack with his energy and unpredictability.

His passing and creativity have also been on full display as Ghana have relied on counterattacks as they switch from defense to attack. Kudus' fearlessness also make him the perfect player to use as an attacking midfielder as he has 32 passes and 79 touches through two matches.

Federico Valverde (Uruguay)

Although manager Diego Alonso is keen to employ the Real Madrid midfielder in more of a defensive role, he's versatile enough to be deployed in any number of positions with a massive work rate and a tireless ability to perform.

He can cover the entire pitch, use his vision and passing ability to set up the likes of Darwin Nunez, Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez, has a keen eye for goal and a natural ability to read the game and could be the difference maker in this all-important contest.
