Germany have been eliminated from the 2022 World Cup despite a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in their Group E finale at the Al-Bayt Stadium.

Serge Gnabry opened the scoring after just ten minutes, but Los Ticos took a shock 2-1 lead in the second half.

Yeltsin Tejada fired home after Manuel Neuer kept out Kendall Waston's header and Neuer had the final touch when Juan Pablo Vargas bundled over from close range.

Substitute Kai Havertz picked up a brace and Nicklas Fullkrug added a fourth, but Japan's victory over Spain ensured Die Mannschaft suffered an early exit for the second straight World Cup.

Here is how VAVEL rated the players from both sides.

Costa Rica

Keylor Navas - 8

Conceding four goals might not seem like it warrants a rating this high, but his improvement after the disaster against Spain and his play here, despite conceding four, warrant it.

Oscar Duarte - 5

Was rooted to the spot when Gnabry opened the scoring at the near post and things never got better for him.

Kendall Waston - 5.5

Got away with what looked like a penalty after taking Antonio Rudiger to ground attempting to defend a set-piece. Looked much better in attack, a rarity.

Juan Pablo Vargas - 4

Was involved in the goalmouth scramble that led to Neuer turning home, but he's on the pitch to defend and he didn't do that.

Keysher Fuller - 7

A bright spot for Costa Rica during the whole of the tournament. Should have scored when one-on-one with Neuer and he did improve in the second half, but didn't defend his right-hand side too well.

Celso Borges - 5.5

Like his midfield colleagues, he was overrun by Germany for most of the night. Did deny Jermaine Musiala with a terrific first-half tackle.

Yeltsin Tejeda - 6

Barely contributed in attack, but leaves Qatar with a goal that started Germany's latest downfall at a World Cup.

Bryan Oviedo - 6

Was the only Costa Rica midfielder to be an outlet in the first half and a couple of his crosses deserved better finishes.

Brandon Aguilera - 6.5

This was the 19-year-old's seventh international match and his inexperience bore through as did next to nothing and was replaced at halftime.

Joel Campbell - 6.5

It's hard to play even against this version of Germany as a lone striker, but should have done better with the one or two half-chances he was presented with.

Johan Venegas - 5.5

Was the lone center-forward, but offered little and was substituted in the second half.

Substitutes

Youstin Salas - 6

His sixth-ever cap was a good one as Costa Rica showed more adventure going forward even if it left them open at the back.

Ronald Matarrita - 6

Shouldn't have come on as Los Ticos needed a goal, not another defender and didn't prevent Germany from grabbing three late goals.

Jeweson Bennette - 6

He never found his footing as Germany's late run of goals denied Costa Rica any outlet.

Germany

Manuel Neuer - 8

Likely his final World Cup match and while he scored an own goal, he was alert to make a couple of big saves when Costa Rica attacked.

Joshua Kimmich - 7

Was energetic and forced Navas into a fine save from 30 yards out and his experience will be key to get German football back on track ahead of hosting the 2024 European Championships.

Niklas Sule - 5

Was inactive on the right because there wasn't much for him to do, but let a cross go right through him, giving Costa Rica a chance to level.

Antonio Rudiger - 5.5

Couldn't deal with a bouncing ball that led to Fuller nearly equalizing.

David Raum - 5

Superb down the left flank and he set up the first goal, but he was questionable with the ball and better teams will exploit it.

Ilkay Gundogan - 6

Taken off right as Germany's night began to fall apart and did very little, but also made no errors to somewhat salvage his night.

Leon Goretzka - 6

Crisp in the first half and dominated the midfield and at least he wasn't on the field when Germany's meltdown began.

Serge Gnabry - 7

Scored with his head and set up Havertz. Some of his finishing was shaky, but he'll be a player to build around.

Jamal Musiala - 8.5

A star for Die Mannschaft now and going forward. Costa Rica had no answer for his sizzling runs and he hit the post twice.

Leroy Sane - 6

His return to the starting lineup wasn't what he thought, showing he needed more match fitness.

Thomas Muller - 5

Missed a few chances that didn't make much of a difference in the end, but it summed up how poor he was at what could be his last World Cup.

Substitutes

Lukas Klostermann - 6

Not as influential as he could be when Costa Rica came into the game.

Niclas Fullkrug - 8

Showed why Hansi Flick subbed him in the last two games, scoring in each, but is probably not the long-term answer up front.

Kai Havertz - 7.5

Saved Germany's night by turning a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 lead with a pair of goals.

Mario Gotze - 6.5

He won the 2014 World Cup final with a goal against Argentina, but he, like his team, has gone downhill in the eight years since.
