In the brutal world of football, third choice keepers understand that the likelihood of them ever getting any game time is reserved purely when there is an injury crisis, leaving the first two choices out injured. But Manchester United’s third choice keeper Victor Valdes, formerly of Barcelona, is reportedly on the verge of cancelling his contract with the club, believing he is being treated poorly.

Lack of game time for Valdes

The Spanish keeper has only played twice for Manchester United’s first team in a competitive fixture, due to a breakdown in relations with manager Louis van Gaal after Valdes refused to play in an under 21’s fixture, according to ESPN.

The 33-year-old ex-Barcelona keeper who has won everything there is to be won in the game of football, has been made to train away from the first team and hasn’t even been given a Premier League squad number for the current season, more or less proving that he won’t feature for the side at any point.

Valdes joined Manchester United last season, to help him regain his fitness after a horrific knew injury ended his Barcelona career, but after impressing in training he was offered a three-year deal.

While he performed well in the US tour in pre-season his reported refusal to play for the under 21’s in the pre-season caused the reportedly explosive falling out between Valdes and Van Gaal.

It would not be a shock if Valdes was released or even demanded the cancellation of his contract in the coming weeks, or at least find a move during the January transfer window.

Wife slams clubs treatment of Valdes

Victor Valdes has hardly been passive about his treatment himself, but the reports of him cancelling his contract with Manchester United come just hours after his wife slams the club for not even inviting Valdes to the UNICEF charity Gala last night.

Despite it being a charity event hosted by UNICEF, Manchester United didn’t seem to be too charitable with Valdes as he was left out of the event, reportedly not even getting an invite according to his wife.

With a strong core of Spanish players at the club who are all extremely close, it is a surprise to see Valdes out cast so easily by the first team but with relations between Valdes and the club reaching an all-time low, it is expected that his short and very unsuccessful stint at the club is about to reach an end.
