Unfortunately, that's all we've got time for tonight. I've been Oliver Emmerson, taking you through the League Cup semi-final first leg between Southampton and Liverpool. Until next time, goodnight!

All over on the South Coast and Southampton will take a lead to Anfield in two weeks time following an impressive performance today, especially defensively. Nathan Redmond's first-half goal was the decider, however he'll go to sleep tonight thinking he should have had more, with the woodwork and Loris Karius preventing him from widening the gap.

Full-time: Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

90+2: I was wondering how long it was going to take for Coutinho to smash one from long range, and he's just answered my question. The shot wasn't pretty, just ask whoever caught it in Row Z.

90: Four minutes of stoppage time.

89: Liverpool very patient in possession as they look to work it around the Southampton defence, but the door just won't open. Coutinho eventually looks to force the issue by sending Origi in, however his pass is just a little too strong.

85: Sturridge blasts the ball over as he looks to curl one from distance, five left here.

84: Redmond should have another! Lucas slips in his pursuit of Long allowing the forward to send a perfect ball across for Redmond, who dinks Karius with the crossbar coming to Liverpool's rescue. The ball is pumped back into the area shortly after, Karius confidently punching away.

83: Liverpool switching things around a little too, Origi for Firmino.

82: Jay Rodriguez picks up a yellow card for hauling Klavan back and is immediately substituted for Shane Long. It's a double change from the hosts, with James Ward-Prowse replacing Steven Davis.

79: Long range shots in either half from Coutinho and Rodriguez, high and then wide respectively.

74: Claude Puel with a change, Hojbjerg on for Clasie in midfield.

71: Bertrand in-behind after a lovely backheel by Rodriguez, but his cross is intercepted by Klavan. You get the feeling that Southampton might regret not getting a second if the game finishes like this.

67: Big chance for Southampton on the counter-attack from that corner! Redmond slips Cedric in and he's only got Karius to beat, but the full-back blasts the ball into the side netting.

66: Coutinho already bringing a spark to Liverpool going forward, he skips past a couple before winning a corner from a tight angle. Still time for the Reds here if they can turn the tide of momentum in this one.

62: On comes Coutinho, replacing Wijnaldum. He goes to the left, Lallana drops back into midfield and Firmino switches flanks. It's Coutinho's first football in over six weeks, can he wake his side up?

59: The ball breaks to Lallana on the edge of the area, with the former Saints man turning before striking a first time shot with his left foot, one that rolls wide. Philippe Coutinho looks like he's going to come on.

56: Van Dijk and Sturridge now tangling in an area you would expect with the Englishman going down under some pressure, only to see play waved on by the referee.

54: Liverpool nearly caught out again as Van Dijk goes past Sturridge (yeah, that is the right way round) in the area before his cross is caught by Karius.

48: Encouraging start to the half for Southampton as Milner fouls Cedric in a dangerous position, the free-kick then resulting in a corner which is pushed away by Karius.

45: Back up and running as the second half begins.

Into the break and Southampton will be delighted. They've not dominated possession but have dominated the chances, and it could have been more than one if not for some fine stops by Loris Karius. Redmond with the goal that makes the difference, although he could have had three. Big second half coming up.

Half-time: Southampton 1-0 Liverpool

45: One minute of added time.

44: Brilliant stop! It should be 2-0! Liverpool giving Southampton all kinds of space in the box as the ball falls kindly for Redmond 10 yards out, but Karius denies him with a brilliant reflex stop.

40: "Ole Ole, Ole Ole Coutinho-ho-ho" sing the away fans, keen to see their star back in action.

38: Southampton have sucked the life out of this game a little and they'll be fine with that. They've got their goal and Liverpool don't look like equalising against this deep back-line. A big team talk needed by Jürgen Klopp.

31: Lucas wants a penalty as he goes down being held by Cedric whilst Milner swings a free-kick in, nothing doing.

26: Quick feet from Firmino and Lallana aids Liverpool in winning a corner on the counter-attack, one that's easily claimed by Fraser Forster.

24: Liverpool attempt to strike back straight away, but to no avail with the home defence holding strong.

21: Poor defending from Klavan leaves Lovren isolated two - one in the area, the ball slipped across for Redmond who calmly finishes past a helpless Karius. 1-0!

GOAL! Redmond doesn't miss this time!

19: And a save at the other end! Loris Karius called into action as Redmond finds himself in buckets of space following a cross, the 'keeper making a good stop.

18: Save! Good stop from Forster as Lallana knocks the ball down for Firmino following Can's ball into the area, the Brazilian stinging Forster's palms as he pushes the ball over.

15: Liverpool threatening as Firmino finds Emre Can on the left hand side of the penalty area, however nobody can get on the end of a dangerous looking cross from the German.

10: Problem for Southampton here as Virgil Van Dijk goes down clutching his back after an aerial challenge with Daniel Sturridge. He's going to play on, one to keep an eye on. Adam Lallana is nutmegged by Bertrand and gets a few jeers from the home crowd.

7: Lots of early possession here for the away side, although they aren't being made to work hard for it with Southampton seemingly content to sit back.

3: Redmond with a dangerous early cross that bounces off Lovren and forces Karius into action, no problem for the goalkeeper though as he claims the ball fairly easily.

0: Underway!

The two teams are out onto the pitch, both sets of fans in good voice. All ready to go!

Claude Puel has the following names to call from if he looks to his bench: Lewis, McQueen, Stephens, Long, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Sims.

Philippe Coutinho is back on the bench for Liverpool, he'll be hoping for some minutes tonight. The rest of the away bench contains Mignolet, Gomez, Moreno, Stewart, Woodburn, Origi.

Southampton XI: Forster; Cedric, Yoshida, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Clasie, Davis, Romeu; Redmond, Tadic, Rodriguez.

Liverpool XI: Karius; Clyne, Lovren, Klavan, Milner; Lucas, Can, Wijnaldum; Lallana, Firmino, Sturridge.

Southampton have had a trickier run to this stage, fending off three Premier League opponents in Crystal Palace, Sunderland and Arsenal. Can they make it four and book a trip to Wembley?

Despite Mane's absence, Liverpool are set to field a strong side tonight after Klopp heavily rotated against Plymouth Argyle at the weekend. The Reds have beaten Burton Albion, Derby County, Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United to get this far, fielding weakened teams in each of those games, but Klopp is expected to step things up tonight.

Liverpool are without the aforementioned Mane, who they bought in the summer, as he's participating at the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, whilst Joel Matip isn't expected to feature due to an ongoing ankle issue. However, Philippe Coutinho is set to return to the first team squad for the first time since injuring himself in November, albeit in a role off the bench.

Southampton will be without Jose Fonte tonight after the defender handed in a transfer request a few days ago. Manager Claude Puel has revealed that his captain may not play for the Saints until the end of January, when he's hoping he'll still be at the club. Sofiane Boufal and Charlie Austin are the hosts' other big absentees, however they will be boosted by the returning pair Cedric Soares and Cuco Martina.

Things went better for the Reds the last time they played Southampton in this competition, with the two teams playing as recently as last season, at the quarter final stage. Liverpool went behind early to a Sadio Mane goal, but came back in some style to secure a 6-1 thrashing, Divock Origi bagging a hat-trick whilst Daniel Sturridge scored twice.

Spoils were shared the last time these two met here, in the league back in November. Liverpool dominated proceedings and came close numerous times, but couldn't find a winning goal as the game ended 0-0.

It's the first leg of the last four tie this evening, with each side looking to put a foot into the final with a win. The winner is likely to come up against Manchester United at Wembley late next month after the Red Devils defeated Hull City 2-0 last night, Juan Mata and Marouane Fellaini on the scoresheet at Old Trafford. Whilst the world would eagerly anticipate a Liverpool - United final, Southampton certainly won't be rolling over for the Reds.
