The contest between the two sides this weekend, is of gargantuan importance for both teams, with Chelsea looking to maintain their place in third, whilst Sheffield United look to make up for lost time in their chase for European football next campaign.

The return fixture at Stamford Bridge provided plenty of entertainment for the neutral, with Chris Wilder’s newly promoted side laying down a marker for their so far successful season, by taking a point from SW6 in a two-all draw.

There have been plenty of contests with a similar goal factor and entertainment for the neutral, here’s our three of the best.

Chelsea 6-1 Sheffield United (September 9th, 1961)

In a match that saw Blues and Scotland defender, Tommy Docherty, make his debut at Stamford Bridge, his side played in some style, putting six goals past the Blades in the old First Division.

The Chelsea side, then coached by title-winning manager, Ted Drake, before his departure at the end of the month, contained legends such as Bobby Tambling and, outside left player, Frankie Blunstone

A hat-trick from Tambling, as well as a brace from Barry Bridges and a singular effort from Peter Brabrook, sent the Blades home in a downer.

The tables were turned by the end of that 1961/62 campaign however, with the Blues relegated to the second division, finishing rock-bottom of division one, whilst the Blades finished the season in 5th place, one place and one-point above local rivals, Sheffield Wednesday

Chelsea 1-2 Sheffield United (October 31st, 1992)

Halloween fever set around the Bridge as the side that would become the Blues  Premier League banana skin, took all three-points from SW6.

In the inaugural Premier League season, Chelsea had their own horror show under then manager, Ian Porterfield

Former Republic of Ireland midfielder Andy Townsend put the Blues one-nil up, before the Blades responded with two goals, courtesy of Adrian Littlejohn and Brian Deane, to turn the game on its head.

Chelsea finished the campaign in a comfortable mid-table position of 10th, whilst Sheffield United were left looking over their shoulders slightly, finishing further down in 15th place.

Chelsea 2-2 Sheffield United (31st August 2019)

In current Chelsea manager, Frank Lampard’s, second game at Stamford Bridge, following a previous one-all draw with Brendan Rodger’s Leicester City, the Blues were once again held to a draw by a team they were expected to beat.

Young striker, Tammy Abraham, scored his first two goals at home in the League for Chelsea, which put his side two-nil up and on course for a seemingly routine home victory.

Sheffield United however, rallied, nabbing a goal back early in the second-half, courtesy of Callum Robinson

Chris Wilder’s Blades then pushed on in search of an equaliser, with the eventual leveller coming via the misfortune of Chelsea centre-half, Kurt Zouma, who put the ball into his own net.

Both sides have gone from strength to strength since this fixture, with Sheffield United’s recent victory at home to Tottenham Hotspur, meaning that you would be foolish to have this tie labelled as a straight-forward, Chelsea victory.
