Manchester City look to reclaim top spot in the Premier League as the Citizens host Southampton.

The champions are second in the table following a 6-3 win over bitter rivals Manchester United and followed it up with a 5-0 thrashing of Danish side Copenhagen in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League.

Saints come into this fixture on the back of three consecutive defeats, dropping a 2-1 decision to Everton despite opening the scoring to sit 16th in the table, a point above the relegation zone.

This has not been a kind fixture for Southampton recently, going winless in five against Manchester City, having last defeated the Citizens in May of 2020.

Team news

Southampton

Adam Armstrong and Juan Larios are both expected to be named to the squad after recovering from minor injuries.

Under-fire boss Ralph Hassenhuttl revealed that one or two players had been suffering with illness, but returned to training on Thursday.

Defender Tino Livramento (knee) and midfielder Romeo Lavia (hamstring) are both still unavailable.

Manchester City

The reigning champions will be without defenders Kyle Walker (groin surgery) and John Stones (hamstring). No timetable has been set for the duo's return. Kalvin Phillips is out through a shoulder injury.

Likely lineups

Manchester City: Ederson; Gómez, Aké, Dias, Cancelo; Gündogan, Rodri, De Bruyne; Foden, Haaland, Silva

Southampton: Bazunu; Perraud, Salisu, Bella-Kotchap, Walker-Peters; Maitland-Niles, Ward-Prowse; Armstrong, Aribo, Elyounoussi; Adams

Key players

Erling Haaland (Manchester City)

The Norwegian has already scored an astonishing 19 goals since joining the Citizens, 14 of those in eight top-flight appearances, and will require all of the attention from the Southampton defense.
