Southampton started off Tuesday evening's fixture well off the pace. A flood of Chelsea chances led to Raheem Sterling's opening goal midway through the first half, with Chelsea looking set to be in the ascendancy for the rest of the evening.

Romeo Lavia's equaliser instigated a revival from the home side. The Blues were unable to regain a sense of control over the game, with Southampton not allowing to be put under the same amount of pressure, as they were prior to the opener.

Things got worse for the visitors, as Adam Armstrong went on to strike moments before the half-time interval. The Saints comfortably negotiated the second half and ensured that the three points stayed with them at St. Mary's.

Both teams now sit on seven points each, from their opening five fixtures.

These are the player ratings from the game:

Southampton

Gavin Bazunu - 7/10

Didn't have anything major to do, in the second half especially. A total of three saves to make and not at fault for the conceded goal.

Kyle Walker-Peters - 7/10

Looked pretty threatening going forward. An energetic presence down the right hand side. Strong contribution towards the win.

Armel Bella-Kothcap - 8/10

Man of the match. Goal-saving tackle against Sterling was the highlight of a very solid performance. Made Havertz have a very quiet game.

Mohammed Salisu - 7/10

A few poor moments during Chelsea's dominant period in the first half. After the conceded goal he, along with the rest of the defence, was impenetrable.

Romain Perraud - 7.5/10

Assist for Armstrong's goal and could have had another if it wasn't for Cucurella's block after Elyounoussi's header from point-blank range. Two big chances created thanks to him.

Romeo Lavia - 8/10

What a night for the 18-year-old. A first Premier League goal, before injury forced him off in the 60th minute. It was a fantastic strike to beat Mendy from outside of the box. Looks ready for the Premier League level.

Ibrahima Diallo - 6/10

Contributed towards Southampton's disciplined second half performance.

James Ward-Prowse - 7/10

A pre-assist for Southampton's winner. Was composed on the ball and often found himself in good areas with the ball.

Mohamed Elyounoussi - 6.5/10

Wasn't as involved in his team's attacking play. However, had a huge chance and was denied a goal thanks to Cucurella's block. Pressed and defended with good intensity, as well.

Che Adams - 7/10

Caused Chelsea's defence issues with his physicality. Showed very good energy in and out of possession.

Adam Armstrong - 7.5/10

Like the rest of the forward line, played with great energy and intensity. Got the winning goal which was very well taken.

Substitutes

Joe Aribo (60') - 6/10

A solid presence in midfield. Didn't allow Chelsea much in the last half hour.

Moussa Djenepo (73') - N/A

Lyanco (86') - N/A

Chelsea

Edouard Mendy - 5.5/10

Could have done better for Lavia's goal, got his hand to it, but unable to keep it out.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 4/10

Looked way off the pace. Was up against Adam Armstrong for a lot of the game and was no match for the energy he could provide. No attacking threat whatsoever.

Thiago Silva - 6/10

Didn't do too much wrong and didn't look too bad. Was composed on the ball. Hard to blame for the defeat.

Kalidou Koulibaly - 5.5/10

Ball deflected off him for the winner, not much he could have done in that moment, specifically. However, Armstrong was allowed too much time to take a touch and shoot in the box.

Marc Cucurella - 6/10

A goal saving block after Elyounoussi's header. Not too much impact going forward as he may have had if he played as a wing back.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek - 6/10

Taken off at half-time due to injury. Would have been harsh to go off based on his performance in the first half, had some good moments going forward.

Jorginho - 4/10

Off the pace, a night to forget. Was outmuscled too easily for the Southampton winner, as well.

Mason Mount - 6.5/10

Looked very lively in the first half. Assist for Sterling's goal and other positive moments. Absent, like the rest of the team, after their opener.

Hakim Ziyech - 5.5/10

Only one great diagonal pass sticks out as a positive memory. Quiet game.

Raheem Sterling - 7/10

Squandered a few decent half chances before, eventually, getting his goal. Still, looks to be a good addition to this Chelsea team.

Kai Havertz - 4/10

Unable to pose any kind of threat to the Southampton defence, even while Chelsea had their dominant spell in the first half.

Substitutes:

Mateo Kovacic (45') - 6/10

Didn't really have a significant part to play in Chelsea's search for an equaliser in the second half.

Christian Pulisic (66') - 6/10

Looked fairly threatening shortly after his introduction. Not too much to note in the closing stages.

Armando Broja (66') - 6.5/10

Didn't have much to feed off, but looked capable of causing issues when the ball did come to him. Had an impressive header which was saved.

Ben Chilwell (67') - 6/10

Didn't have the time to make much of an impact in the wing back role.
