A late penalty by Jay Rodriguez sent Burnley top of the EFL Championship as the Clarets defeated Norwich City 1-0 at Turf Moor.

Despite dominating the first half, Burnley couldn't capitalise as they failed to create a clear-cut chance on goal.

Todd Cantwell went close for the Canaries and Josh Brownhill the same for the Clarets with opportunities remaining at a minimum.

Rodriguez converted from the spot to extend Burnley's unbeaten run to 15 and move them two points clear at the summit while Norwich are seventh following their fourth defeat in the last five games.

Story of the match

Vincent Kompany made four changes to the side that defeated Sunderland with Jordan Beyer, Jack Cork, Ian Maatsen and Rodriguez coming in for Ashley Barnes, Connor Roberts, Charlie Taylor and Josh Cullen, who missed out through injury.

Norwich boss Dean Smith inserted Jon Tomkinson into the starting lineup for his first league appearance for the club. Sam McCallum returned and academy product Bradley Hills was named to the bench.

Burnley had the first chance of the match through Nathan Tella, whose shot was deflected and went out for a corner.

Moments later, the Clarets came close again when the in-form Anass Zaroury curled a shot just inches wide.

On 20 minutes, Johann Berg Gudmundsson picked out Tella, but his shot was straight at Norwich goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

The hosts applied more pressure with Zaroury the danger man, his shot blocked inside the area by defender Grant Hanley.

Burnley registered nine shots on goal over the course of the first half with Norwich not getting a shot off and barely having a sight of the ball.

They would get their first look when Teemu Pukki passed to Todd Cantwell, who saw his close-range strike blocked by Gudmundsson and the rebound cleared away.

Following a counterattack, the ball fell for Brownhill at the back post, but his effort was well wide as Burnley continued searching for an opener.

Kompany made a double change with 20 minutes to go, introducing Roberts and Halil Dervisoglu in place of Vitinho and Tella.

With ten minutes to play, the hosts were awarded a penalty as Hanley handled in the area and Rodriguez stepped up to the spot and he made no mistake, beating Gunn.

Pukki nearly grabbed a late equaliser, getting beyond the last defender, but Clarets shot-stopper Arijanet Muric was on hand to make the save.
