Transfer deadline day is fast approaching and seems like Manchester United are not done with their business in the summer market yet.

The former Chelsea manager is currently rebuilding his Old Trafford side, a process which has already seen the sales of defenders Donald Love, Paddy McNair and Tyler Blackett to Sunderland and Reading, respectively.

On the other hand, Jose Mourinho has landed four main targets at the Theater of Dreams, with Ivorian Eric Bailly being the only defender who was signed from Spanish side Villarreal.

And now the most recent news is Stoke City’s interest in Phil Jones, a defender who had joined Manchester United during the reign of Sir Alex Ferguson.

Stoke City confirm their interest in the player

Speaking to Stoke Senitel, Mark Hughes’ assistant manager Mark Bowen admitted that a deal could be on its way as the Welshman remembers “Sam Allardyce talking about him when he broke through and said he was the new Duncan Edwards”.

Bowen thinks that "he did well as a youngster, got the big move, but it hasn't worked out for him there” and also admitted that he does not ”know how close we are or how far down the line it's gone.”

Stoke are looking for a versatile player

The Potters are looking to add a player who can fill different roles for them as Hughes’ assistant manager said that Jones "played the majority of his career at centre-half, but in his younger days he went into midfield as well.”

It’s also worth to mention that Phil had also featured at the right back position under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Jones is injury prone

The Welshman stated that he does not "know what's gone wrong” with the former Blackburn Rovers man “but he's gone from even a player Fergie [Sir Alex Ferguson] was talking about as being someone who could have been one of the greats.”

The former Queens Park Rangers caretaker manager admitted that Stoke "have a bit of reputation for bringing players like that into this set up and then thriving. Fingers crossed, something may happen."

Jones did not make Mourinho's matchday squad for their first two games of the season and the player had spent a plenty of his Manchester United career on the sidelines due to injury, a reason why the Portuguese is considering to sell him, opening the door for more transfer related rumors by the end of this month.
