Brendan Rodgers has spoken of his delight after his Leicester City side picked up their second victory since the restart of Premier League football against Sheffield United.

Ayoze Perez opened the scoring in first half as the Spaniard drilled a powerful shot past Dean Henderson. Substitute Demarai Gray then doubled the lead with ten minutes to go after he finished confidently following a swift counter-attack.

With this win securing them a place in Europe next season, the Foxes will now be playing to decide which competition they will be part of. A point separates Chelsea, Leicester, and Manchester United heading into the final two games of the season.

‘It was an outstanding team performance’

Speaking post-match, Rodgers revealed how pleased he was with his team’s performances against a tough opponent. He said: “The players showed incredible quality, they battled when they had to. Sheffield United test you physically and that’s okay because when we’re at our best, we’re physically strong and aggressive.

“We showed all of that. I thought our football was very good, we played the shape really well. We scored two goals and with a better pass or finish, we could have had another two or three, so it was an outstanding team performance and a great result for us.”

‘Let’s see if we can go and create some more history’

The Leicester boss also spoke of how ‘proud’ he is of his team after the victory secured the Foxes a top six finish. He said: “Our main goal was could we break into the top six. That was going to be a monumental challenge for us because of the competition, the clubs and the budgets that are ahead of us.

"But together, we’ve been able to do that, and we’ve done it as a collective. I’m so proud of the team. Now they’ve achieved that goal, we’ve got two more games to go, and let’s see if we can go and create some more history."

‘We’ve definitely got a great young player from the academy’

Academy product Luke Thomas was handed his debut and the young left-back impressed, picking up plenty of plaudits after a superb performance. Thomas assisted Perez for his goal in the first half and defended brilliantly to help his side keep their fourth consecutive home clean sheet.

"It was arguably the hardest game he could come into,” Rodgers said. “His temperament is amazing, he’s not phased being around the first team. He understands football, and for a guy who’s slight he’s tenacious. We’ve definitely got a great young player from the academy."
