Liverpool were made to ride their luck on their return to the venue where Jurgen Klopp's side made it six European Cups in 2019.

The visiting Reds came out on top of a nervy clash packed full of contentious decisions, stunning moments and a red card as the UEFA Champions League returned.

  • Story Of The Match

Following a frantic start to proceedings, Mohamed Salah produced the first moment of true quality to waltz past three Atletico Madrid defenders before firing home a deflected opener.

Soon after the visitors were in dreamland when a stunning Naby Keita volley doubled the lead inside the opening 20 minutes.

Unperturbed by the fast start, Diego Simeone's side grew into the contest and were back to within a goal when Antoine Griezmann turned a goal bound effort home from inside the six yard box.

Having scored in style at one end, Keita was at fault for the equaliser as Joao Felix skipped past the Guinean to supply Griezmann once more. This time the Frenchman finished emphatically following a smart first touch.

From being in control, Klopp's side were on the back foot and were thankful of the half time whistle.

Fabinho replaced Keita at the break and the visitors were instantly back in the contest.

Both goalkeepers were forced into making smart saves, albeit Alisson was the busier of the two.

The game changed in a moment as Griezmann was dismissed for a high foot that ended up forcefully in the side of Roberto Firmino's face.

Despite the numerical advantage Liverpool struggled to dominate proceedings and were gifted the opportunity to retake the lead when Mario Hermoso inexplicably bundled into Diogo Jota.

Salah duly converted from the spot for his own personal brace and gave the visitors an all important lead once more.

Just minutes later it appeared that Jota had repaid the favour at the other end but the referee reversed the decision having reviewed the decision at the VAR monitor.

Both managers made multiple changes as the Reds improved their game management to see out the victory in a hostile atmosphere.

  • Conclusion

Albeit far from the perfect display, Klopp will no doubt be delighted to leave with all three points and in complete control of their own destiny in Group B.

His penalty won the game but his first goal was a real special strike, beating three men and drilling an effort hard and low.

There seems to be no end to his brilliance this season and Jurgen Klopp will be relying on him to produce the good at Old Trafford on Sunday as the Reds continue their attack on the Premier League.
