AFC Bournemouth return to the Premier League as the Cherries host Aston Villa in the season opener.

After losing in the play-off semi-finals in 2020/21, Bournemouth finished runner-up in the Championship last season behind Fulham to clinch promotion back to the top flight after two years away.

The Villains finished 14th in the Premier League last season with Steven Gerrard replacing Dean Smith in November. With signings such as Diego Carlos and Philippe Coutinho, the Midlands outfit look to improve upon that.

Team news

AFC Bournemouth

Joe Rothwell, signed from Championship side Blackburn Rovers on a four-year deal, is set to miss out after suffering a quad injury in the Cherries' pre-season finale.

Another new signing, Ryan Fredericks, has also been ruled out after picking up a quad injury while the club were in Portugal for training camp.

David Brooks continues to recover from a diagnosis of Stage 2 non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Aston Villa

Emiliano Buendia returned to full training and will be assessed after the midfielder picked up a thigh injury during a closed-doors friendly against Fulham.

Tyrone Mings (slight injury) and Calum Chambers (illness) are available for selection while Keinan Davis will feature for the U-21's as he continues to work his way back.

Centre-back Kortney Hause is closing in on a return following off-season knee surgery.

Teenager Carney Chukwuemeka has sealed a permanent transfer to Chelsea while Cameron Archer has put pen to paper on a new five-year deal.

Likely line-ups

AFC Bournemouth: Travers; Zemura, Kelly, Mepham, Stacey; Billing, Lerma, Cook; Anthony, Solanke, Christie

Aston Villa: Martinez; Digne, Carlos, Konsa, Cash; Ramsey, Kamara, McGinn; Coutinho, Watkins, Bailey

Key players

Dominic Solanke

The Cherries frontman bagged 29 goals in the Championship last season to help the club to promotion and just signed a new deal that will keep him at Bournemouth through the 2025/26 season.

He only scored three times the last time the Cherries were in the top-flight and will be looking to improve on that record in this campaign.

Philippe Coutinho

The 30-year old made his move to Villa permanent after spending last season on loan in the Midlands, scoring four times and providing three assists in 19 appearances.

His vision, passing and dribbling ability make him the perfect compliment to Ollie Watkins in the Villains' three-man attack.
