Wolves picked up their first Premier League victory of the season on Saturday, beating Southampton 1-0 at Molineux. Daniel Podence's finish on the stroke of half-time was enough to separate the sides.

Podence scored his second goal of the season, rounding off a swift counter-attacking move, in which Matheus Nunes picked up his first assist in a Wolves shirt.

Southampton did have chances to draw level, with Che Adams having a goal disallowed before striking the crossbar.

Neither side threatened late in the game, as Wolves managed to see the match out without any hiccups.

Here are the four main takeaways from the game.

  • It is more than just three points for Wolves

It has been highly publicised that Bruno Lage was in desperate need of a win to ease the ever-growing pressure.

154 days had passed since Wolves last top-flight win, when they beat Aston Villa 2-1 at the start of April.

In their 12 league games since, Wolves had managed to pick up just five points.

A large summer expenditure saw the pressure begin to mount on Lage.

Having to use 'Nuno Espirito Santo's squad' is no longer a valid excuse for many fans, with three new signings in Saturday's starting 11.

Three points against Southampton were a must, and with Liverpool and Manchester City on the horizon, the win was even more important.

  • Wolves need a new striker

After Raul Jimenez's poor performance in midweek, the Mexican saw himself named among the substitutes on Saturday.

During the warm up, Jimenez was removed from the pitch after feeling a slight issue with his groin.

Chem Campbell replaced him on the Wolves bench. It is yet to be announced whether Jimenez will be available on Saturday.

Sasa Kalajdzic was handed his debut, although he only lasted 45 minutes before being removed due to injury.

The club have since confirmed that the Austrian has suffered an injury to his ACL and will see a specialist in the coming days.

The Athletic report that Wolves hold an interest in ex-Chelsea man Diego Costa.

The Spaniard has not played in England since 2017, and will be at Compton Park on Tuesday to undergo a trial. Costa is currently a free agent.

  • Southampton rued their missed opportunities

Southampton would have felt disappointed to have left the West Midlands with no points.

The Saints finished the game having taken more shots than their hosts, and had by far the best chance of the game.

Adams found himself unmarked just one yard out with an open goal, but somehow could not find the net.

The Scottish international scuffed his header onto his forearm, seeing his goal chalked off by referee John Brooks.

Just two minutes later, he saw a header rebound off the crossbar.

The visitors failed to test Jose Sa in the later stages of the game, with a James Ward-Prowse free-kick their only clear chance.

  • A bright future ahead for The Saints?

Although Ralph Hasenhuttl's men failed to pick up any points at Molineux, there were plenty of promising signs to take into next week's clash with Brentford.

Armel Bella-Kotchap put in another solid performance, showing his physicality and pace to put a stop to opposition attacks.

The 20-year-old was playing in just his fifth Premier League game.

Samuel Edozie was handed a debut by Hasenhuttl after his deadline day move from Manchester City.

The English youngster came off the bench in the 73rd minute and injected a new lease of life into Southampton's attacking play.

The 19-year-old looked to run directly at the Wolves defence before finding his teammates in more central areas.

Gavin Bazunu also impressed, despite a slight mistake for Podence's goal.

If Southampton can keep their first team players fit, there is a feeling that there is a very exciting squad coming together at St Mary's

Wolves will look to take their momentum to Anfield next week, where they will meet a Liverpool side looking to kick start their campaign.

Southampton return to familiar surroundings, hosting free-scoring Brentford at St Mary's.
