Southampton came from behind to beat Leicester City 2-1, as the Foxes blew a lead for the second time in three games.

James Maddison fired Leicester into the lead with a brilliantly struck free-kick from just outside the right side of the box. It was the sort of free kick Saints fans usually see from their English midfielder, James Ward-Prowse.

After taking the lead, Brendan Rodgersside took their foot of the gas, and Southampton grew into the game.

They were dominant and got their reward when second half substitute Ché Adams fired the Saints level in the 68th minute.

Southampton continued to look the more dangerous side, and the team more likely to find a late winner. The pressure was piled on the Foxes, until a whipped cross from James Ward-Prowse found Adams, who finished superbly with a brilliant volley.

With Leicester’s only shot on target being the goal, it never looked as if they were going to find a late equaliser. The result leaves Leicester in the bottom three, after a disappointing start to the season.

Story of the match

Leicester City started with a spring in their step, as they looked to silence any pre-match concerns. Harvey Barnes started brightly after missing the start of the season. Barnes and Jamie Vardy were linking up well on the left side early on, causing the right side of Southampton’s defence some problems.

The first chance of the game fell to the feet of Ayoze Pérez. It came after some good work from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall who found Pérez with a chipped cross to the back post. But the Spaniard failed to make the most of the chance, with a volley which did not trouble Gavin Bazunu.

Southampton thought they had taken the lead halfway through the first half when Sekou Mara went through and finished well, before the offside flag was correctly raised. No VAR intervention was needed.

It was Harvey Barnes who came closest for Leicester in the first half with a left-footed shot dribbling just wide of the right post, after Southampton had gifted possession to the hosts.

Maddison opened the scoring was a delightful free-kick. About 25-yards out, the Englishman bent it round the right side of the wall into the bottom right corner. Maddison followed up on his goal at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday with another on Saturday afternoon.

In the minutes after Leicester’s opener the momentum shifted, as the Saints grew into the game and the host's grip on the game loosened, something Leicester fans will be far too familiar with after conceding two goals in the immediate aftermath of scoring against Arsenal.

Ralph Hassenhuttl's side dominated play until their equaliser in the 68th minute, with super-sub Ché Adams making an instant impact firing the Saints level. Armel Bella-Kotchap played a big part in the goal with a smart lay-off to Adams.

With twenty minutes to go Southampton looked by far the better side, with Leicester struggling to get out their own half.

The Saints' pressure paid off when they found a late winner in the 84th minute. Adams finished expertly after being picked out by Ward-Prowse. The goal sparked a mass walkout as the boos rang around the King Power Stadium.

Rodgers’ substitutions had little impact on the game with Kelechi Iheanacho and Patson Daka struggling to get involved.

It was Southampton’s first three points of the season, but leaves Leicester winless after a poor start to the season, with pressure starting to build on the manager.

Rodgers’ side travels to West London to face Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea next weekend while Southampton host a struggling Manchester United side.

Player of the match

Ché Adams was the match winner, with a fantastic cameo off the bench.

The Scotsman has been linked with moves away from the south coast side this summer, but a brace today may be enough to change Hasenhüttl’s thinking.

Both his goals were taken well and he changed the game when he was brought on.
