Blackburn Rovers are back up to second place in the EFL Championship following a 1-0 victory over Hull City at the MKM Stadium.

Sammie Szmodics scored the only goal of the match in the 15th minute as Blackburn won their fourth consecutive game while denying Hull a third straight victory.

Tigers goalkeeper Nathan Baxter made fine saves in the second half to deny Rovers leading scorer Ben Brereton as well as Jon Gallagher.

Story of the match

Andy Dawson named the same Hull side that defeated Rotherham last time out while Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson made two changes with Szmodics and Tyrhys Dolan replacing Hayden Carter and the injured Ryan Hedges.

Blackburn dominated possession in the early stages and Adam Wharton fired over from ten yards before Brereton set up Szmodics, who dragged his shot wide.

Sam Gallagher chested down for the former Peterborough man, but Nathan Baxter did well to keep his effort out.

A moment later, Rovers were in front. A sublime through ball by Wharton found Szmodics and he found the bottom corner from an acute angle.

The Tigers nearly levelled just before the half-hour mark as Regan Slater sent in a teasing cross that just eluded Ryan Longman and instead crashed off the left post.

Jacob Greaves then went well wide with a volley after a dinked pass by Jean-Michael Seri and at the other end Brereton got on the end of Wharton's pass, but shot straight at Baxter.

The Tigers made a double change at halftime, Brandon Fleming and Ozan Tufan replacing Alfie Jones and Seri.

On 52 minutes, Gallagher got on the end of Brereton's audacious clipped ball only to be denied by a brilliant save from Baxter. Moments later, Szmodics flew a shot over the upright.

Dimitrios Pelkas nodded down a cross by Greg Docherty and found Greaves, who headed wide as the match approached the hour mark.

Daniel Ayala and Carter came on in a double change for the visitors as Carter played in the right wing-back position and Lewis Travis moving into the central midfield.

Brereton cut inside from the left wing and he had a go from 25 yards out, but he could only find the side netting and at the other end Ayala blocked a first-time effort by Cyrus Christie.

Late on, Slater fired high and wide before Fleming's cross intended for Oscar Estupinan was cleared by the Blackburn defense.
