The Milwaukee Brewers are involved in one of the most exciting division races in all of Major League Baseball. They currently hold a .5 game lead over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central, with the Pittsburgh Pirates 2.5 games back and the Cincinnati Reds 3.5 games back. The Brewers sit at 55-45, but have lost 14 of their last 19 games, which can in large part be attributed to the struggles of their bullpen. Could the Brewers make a move before the trade deadline to shore up their bullpen?

Although there were reports yesterday in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that GM Doug Melvin is downplaying the likelihood of making a deadline move due to the "lack of playing time for a bat" and the "limited impact a reliever can have because of the few innings they can pitch," this writer decided to sit and look at who the Brewers might try and bring in if they decide to go for anyone.

Joakim Soria: Soria recently came off of the DL and resumed closing duties for the Texas Rangers. The Rangers currently sit in last place in the AL West with a record of 40-59. Soria has been one of their few bright spots, saving 17 games out of a possibility of 18. He has posted a 2.51 ERA, and a WHIP of only 0.80. Although the Brewers have no need for a closer, with All-Star Francisco Rodriguez having one of the best seasons of his career, the Brewers could be tempted to try and bring in Soria as just a late-inning reliever. With Melvin as GM, there is precident for this. In 2011, just before the trade deadline, Melvin brought Rodriguez in for the beginning of his first stint at the club. Although he had been closing for the Mets, Rodriguez quickly transitioned into the Brewers setup man, and bolstered the bullpen for the Brewers run to the NLCS.

Koji Uehara: The Red Sox closer and hero of last year's postseason is another who could be on the move. This season, Uehara has posted a 5-2 record and record 20 of 22 possible saves, an ERA of 1.58 and a WHIP of 0.74. Although these numbers are undoubtedly superb, they are slightly elevated from his 2013 totals, in particular the fact that his ERA has risen 0.49 points, which could play some part in whether or not he stays in Boston. Boston currently sits at 47-52, but they are only 7 games out of first in the divison and 5.5 games out of the wildcard. Couple that with the fact that they have won 5 in a row, and it looks likely Uehara will stay a Red Sox, but if they were to lose several games in a row before the trade deadline, it wouldn't be shocking to see him leave Boston.

Joaquin Benoit: The San Diego Padres setup man has been having a career year, and this could lead to a deadline move for him out of San Diego. Benoit has caught eyes around the majors this season with his 4-2 record, 16 holds, 1.99 ERA and 0.84 WHIP. The Padres currently sit at 43-55, 11.5 games behind the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers in a tie for first in the NL West and 11 games behind the Cardinals for the second wild card spot. Given that the Padres seem doomed to another year out of the pennant race, they could well be interested in shopping Benoit.

It remains to be seen whether or not the Brewers will make a trade deadline move, but if they do it seems likely it will be for a late reliever, and it could well be one of these three.
