With hits in each of his first two at bats Monday night, New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter tied Hall-of-Famer Carl Yastrzemski for seventh place on the all-time hit list. He then singled in the seventh inning to take sole possession of seventh place.

With one out in the top of the first inning, Jeter received a standing ovation from the Texas Rangers' fans as he came to the plate. He then grounded the first pitch he saw from Rangers ace Yu Darvish into left field for a single (video). That single lifted Jeter's hit total to 3,418, putting him one behind the Boston Red Sox' legendary outfielder/first baseman.

In the top of the third, Jeter followed Brett Gardner's solo home run with a first-pitch ground rule double into the right-center field gap that bounced into the stands. The double was career hit #3,419 (video), pulling Jeter even with Yastzremski.

After a walk in the fifth, Jeter came up again with two outs in the top of the seventh. He grounded the 1-2 pitch into center field for career hit #3,420. With that single, Jeter now stands alone in seventh place on the all-time hit list.

Yastrzemski played his entire 23-year career with the Red Sox from 1961-1983. He finished with a career record of .285, 452 HR, and 1,844 RBI.

Next up for Jeter is Pittsburgh Pirates legend Honus Wagner, who sits in sixth place with 3,430. Wagner began his career in 1897 with the Louisville Colonels. He became a Pirate in a December, 1899, trade and played 18 years in Pittsburgh from 1900-1917. He hit .328 with 101 HR and 1,733 RBI in what is commonly known as the Dead Ball Era.

Following his 3,420th hit, Jeter's career record is .311, 258 HR, and 1,288 RBI.

Jeter will very likely pass Wagner in early- to mid-August. He would then need 84 more hits to move into fifth place, passing Tris Speaker (3,514), formerly of the Red Sox and Cleveland Indians for most of his 22-year career from 1907-1928. With Jeter retiring after the 2014 season ends, it is highly unlikely that he will crack the top five. Nevertheless, Derek Jeter has already hit his way into the Hall of Fame.
