For the fifth time in their last six games and the third time in the four game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Washington Nationals won in walk-off fashion. Arizona gave the Nationals Thursday's walk-off win due to Jordan Pacheco's throwing error on Anthony Rendon's groundout that allowed Denard Span to score.
Wade Miley struggled with his control, having six walks and giving up eight hits, but still managed to battle and keep the Nationals off the scoreboard in his six and two-thirds innings of work. The six walks allowed by Miley was the most he had given up in a game since April 27, 2013 when he walked seven Colorado Rockies in a 3-2 win.
Gio Gonzalez was even better, throwing seven scoreless innings while allowing just four hits to go with six strikeouts. Gonzalez has recorded six or more strikeouts in 14 of his 21 starts so far in 2014. Unfortunately for Gonzalez, he picked up a no-decision which kept his current five game losing streak intact.
The NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers won on Thursday meaning that the D-backs fell to 18.5 games behind in the division with 34 games remaining. They are also 15 games back of the San Francisco Giants for the second wild-card position in the National League.
The D-backs come home to start an eight game home stand, starting with a three game weekend series against the San Diego Padres. Josh Collmenter will face Odrisamer Despaigne. Collmenter will be watched closely by the Arizona coaching staff after coming off his worst start of the season against the Miami Marlins, where it was noted his velocity had dropped.
