1950: Philadelphia Phillies IF Eddie Waltkus is named the Comeback Player of the Year by the Associated Press. Seventeen months prior, Waltkus was shot in the chest with a rifle by an obsessed fan.

1977: Texas Rangers acquire 1977 Cy Young Award winner LHP Sparky Lyle, as well as LHP David Rajsich, RHP Larry McCall, IF Domingo Ramos, C Mike Heath, and $400 thousand from the New York Yankees in exchange for LHP David Righetti, LHP Paul Mirabella, RHP Mike Griffin, and OF Juan Beniquez.

1987: Philadelphia Phillies' RP Steve Bedrosian wins the National League Cy Young Award, edging Chicago Cubs' RHP Rick Sutcliffe 57-55, the closest vote in history. Sutcliffe becomes just the third reliever in history to win the Award.

1988: Los Angeles Dodgers' RHP Orel Hershiser unanimously wins the Cy Young Award. He becomes the only player to win the Cy Young Award, NLCS MVP, and World Series MVP in the same season.

2008Evan Longoria unanimously wins American League Rookie of the Year, the first major postseason award in the Tampa Bay Rays' franchise history.

2010: Legendary Seattle Mariners' broadcaster David Niehaus passes away at the age of 75. Niehaus called the very first pitch in franchise history, as well as 5,283 others.
