The Boston Red Sox have claimed 3B/1B/DH Juan Francisco off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays. Francisco is in his first year of arbitration eligibility this year, so the Red Sox are not tied to him.

Francisco batted .220/.291/.496 last season with 16 home runs and 43 RBI in 106 games. He also posted a terrible 116/27 K/BB ratio with a 0.5 WAR.

74 of the 106 games he played last season came from the third base position, so he is perfectly capable of being Boston's 2015 starting third baseman, in case the Red Sox do not sign costless agent Pablo Sandoval. The Red Sox did not have a consistent third baseman last season, rotating injured Will Middlebrooks, shortstop Xander Bogaerts, versatile Brock Holt, and calling up youngster Garin Cecchini a couple of times.

If the Red Sox do manage to sign Sandoval, there is a good chance they will non-tender Francisco before the December 2nd deadline, making him a costless agent.
