The Arizona Diamondbacks are coming off a very bad season and they finished with an MLB-worst 64-98 record in 2014. This generated plenty of changes on their Front Office and there were several players traded to start a rebuilding effort so elements like Miguel Montero and Didi Gregorius were packed for prospects in an effort to go younger with the sight on the future.

However, it seems as if the DBacks aren't going to rebuild completely and they could still be a factor on several of the pitchers that are still available on the costless agent market.

Jon Lester decided to join the Chicago Cubs and most of the mid-rotation options - like Ervin Santana, Francisco Liriano and Brandon McCarthy - already signed with other teams but there are still two players that could make an impact for any team they decide to join: Max Scherzer and James Shields.

Scherzer is expected to command more than $200 million and at least seven years while Shields is looking for a shorter deal but around $18 to $20 million per year. According to sources, Arizona has had internal discusions as to whether they should pursue any of them and it seems as if the money is there, they will try to lure one of them to lead a pitching staff that's not expected to be a dominant force in the NL.

Arizona could also look to the international costless agents as they've been reportedly scouting Japanese hurler Kenta Maeda. While Maeda doesn't have the upside or the track record of Masahiro Tanaka, he's been quite dominant in the NPB and he projects to be a middle of the rotation starter with the potential for more. He will be certainly cheaper than Tanaka - who cost the Yankees $155 million for a seven-year deal - and he would certainly be a good addition for Arizona if he's able to translate his game to the US.

There are some other veterans and reclamation projects on the market - like Jake Peavy and Brett Anderson just to name a few - but the Diamondbacks aren't expected to pursue them. They have set their sights on something bigger this offseason and it seems like they could be a sleeper team to land any of the top arms remaining on the board.
