As the lights shone bright around the skyscrapers of Toronto, as they always do, the Toronto Blue Jays (5-4) offense lit up the inside of the Rogers Centre.

The Jays registered their first home win of the young season after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays (5-4), 12-7, Wednesday night.

Led by rookie Dalton Pompey’s first of the season, the Jays hit three home runs to put the game away early.

Mark Buehrle (2-0) went six innings, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in a dominate performance over the visiting Rays. Buehrle received some early run support and sawed off the Ray batters.

Erasmo Ramirez (0-1) got hit early and often en route to a shortened start. The righty struggled to get anything by the Jays, going just 3 1/3 innings allowing seven earned runs on eight hits.

Jays right fielder Jose Bautista put his team on the board first with a one-out, two-run homer to left field. That is Bautista's second homer of the season.

Jose Reyes and Josh Donaldson followed that up with back-to-back RBI singles in the second to stretch the score to 5-0 early on.

Buehrle used the run support to his advantage and dominated the Rays batters not allowing a run until the fifth.

The Jays scored again in third as Kevin Pillar drove in Dioner Navarro with a double before Devon Travis himself doubled to bring home Pillar, making it a 7-0 ball game.

Donaldson found himself on base again with a single that got passed shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera who had it bounce awkwardly in front of him from the new turf at Rogers Centre. Bautista walked and both base runners moved 90 feet on a passed ball.

First baseman Justin Smoak singled in both to make it a 9-0 game.

The Rays finally got to Buehrle for a couple runs in an otherwise good outing for the big lefty. Steven Souza Jr. hit his second home run of the season on a big shot to left field. Mikie Mahtook followed that up with a homer himself the following inning, a two run shot to make it 9-2.

The highlight of the night came in the seventh inning as Pillar got the Rogers Centre crowd on their feet. Tim Beckham launched one which appeared set to clear the fences. The left fielder lined it up perfectly as he timed his jump, climbed the wall, and got his glove over to rob the potential home run.

Pompey stepped up to the plate in the bottom half of the inning to greet reliever Ernesto Frieri with a first pitch solo home run he launched into the second deck in right field, making it 12-3.

The Rays added four runs in the ninth inning off reliever Todd Redmond, led by a Souza Jr. two-run double. But that would be as close as they get after Brett Cecil came in to record the final out of the game.

Tampa Bay won the first two of the four game series. The finale of this series is set for Thursday night.
