It was Jake Peavy's first game back off of the disabled list in the first game of a three game series against the Washington Nationals. Peavy played only two games this season back in April losing both starts and having an ERA of 9.49.

During a rainy first half of the game, it didn't look like either team could gain momentum. With only six total hits for each team, it was the hot Buster Posey who got things started by absolutely cranking a home run on the first pitch of the seventh inning to deep center field, extending his hitting streak to nine games. But with how the Nationals offense has played the last month, it was pretty hard to write them off just yet. Bryce Harper was due up first in the bottom of the seventh where he received his third walk of the ball game. Clint Robinson, a 30-year old rookie, stood confidently at the plate and answered the Giants homerun with one of his own and struck a 1-1 pitch to deep left resulting in a two-run home run. Gio Gonzalez (6-4, 4.16 ERA) pitched a stellar game only giving up five hits in seven innings pitched, which included six strikeouts and zero walks. The one hiccup he had was when Buster Posey, possibly the hottest hitter in baseball, smacked a home run. Two Nationals relievers each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the game and get the win.

Jake Peavy: (0-3, 6.43 ERA) Jake looked like the Jake of old today as he went 6.1 innings striking out four while walking four. At one point in the game Peavy retired 15 of 16 Washington batters, the one baserunner was a walk that didn't amont to anything. Unfortunately for him, the Giants offense couldn't rack up the runs necessary on this wet and muggy day. Peavy's fastball speed has been down each of his last five seasons but he was consistently reaching 92 MPH, where earlier this year he was struggling to get out of the 80's. If he continues to pitch like that, there is no doubt he will be a key piece of the Giants success reaching the post-season as he did last year.

The three game series continues tomorrow afternoon at 11:05 A.M. ET in a 4th of July special in the nation's capital. It should be a doozy where one of the leagues best Madison Bumgarner (8-4, 2.99 ERA) takes on Stephen Strasburg (5-5, 5.49 ERA)
