The Toronto Blue Jays were attempting to salvage their three-game series against the Detroit Tigers with a powerful lineup that had been shut down by Tigers pitching most the week. The Blue Jays worked against the Tigers pitching to secure a 10-5 win over Detroit.

After four starts off the disabled list, Justin Verlander is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA. The 2011 American League Cy Young winner and Most Valuable player has been struggling with command, but today was his best outing -- until the fifth inning.

Jose Bautista and Justin Smoak finalized the Blue Jays' six-run fifth inning with two home runs between them. It started with former Tiger Devon Travis doubling deep to right and scoring a run; from then on, it was hit after hit.

Verlander gave up seven runs on seven hits and two walks over 5.0 innings pitched. The righty tossed 94 pitches, but he was pulled because of an awful fifth inning.

Drew VerHagen was called up a few days ago, but he did not spark the team, giving up two runs on one hit and four walks. He was sent down to the Triple-A Toledo Mud Hens after the game.

"He's still adjusting to it," Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said Sunday. "We talked to him about some things just now, moving forward with him in Toledo."

VerHagen will be replaced by lefty reliever Ian Krol from Triple-A Toledo.

"(The move) had nothing to do with today," Ausmus said. "This had been decided ahead of time. Knowing what Seattle's lineup looks like, we just needed another left-handed arm."

Marco Estrada did not allow Detroit to touch him until the fifth inning, which is when his day ended. Ian Kinsler tripled to deep right center to score James McCann and Jose Iglesias. After he made 101 total pitches, his day was done. Estrada is 5-1 in his last seven starts for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays thought they finally got through a game without damage from J.D. Martinez, but in the sixth, Bo Schultz game up a line drive home run to right to Martinez.

Martinez has 23 home runs over 79 games this season. Last season, he hit 23 home runs, a career-high, over 123 games with the Tigers. He is on pace for 46 home runs for the 2015 season.

While the Blue Jays continued to pack on the runs, Detroit got only two more. Anthony Gose hit his second home run of the season in the seventh, and McCann singled to right, racking up another RBI in the eighth.

With 81 games (half the season), out of the way, Detroit is 41-40. Back in 2012 they were 39-42, but the team came back to win the American League Central. Detroit fans should not sweat; there is half the season left for the Old English D to turn it around before playoff time.
