Just as you assumed that Rick Porcello's 2015 campaign could not become any worse, the injury bug has consumed the 26 year-old righthander, as Boston Red Sox manager John Farrell placed him on the 15-day disabled list Sunday afternoon with tricep soreness and inflammation.

Porcello, boasting a porous 5.81 ERA to accompany his 5-11 record and 1.44 WHIP, was unable to pitch his scheduled bullpen session at Fenway Park on Sunday morning, prompting Farrell to move the right-hander to the disabled list.

The rehabilitation stint is weeks in the making, as the 26-year old has compiled the highest ERA in the American League while yielding an astounding 20 home runs, already the worst mark of his six-year career. His downward spiral cascaded into a horrendous outing last Wednesday night in a loss to the Chicago White Sox, as he recorded just six outs while allowing six runs (five earned) on ten hits while walking one, relinquishing two home runs to pit his team in an abyss of a hole early in the contest.

This start marked the sixth occasion this season in which Porcello had let up at least six runs, summarizing his incompetence on the mound so far in 2015 after receiving a lenghty four-year, $82.5 million extension with Boston this past spring after being traded from the Detroit Tigers for left fielder Yoenis Cespedes in the winter.

Porcello's move to the disabled list will prevent him from making his scheduled start this Tuesday against the first-place New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium, providing left-handed prospect Henry Owens the opportunity to make his major league debut against the fiercest rival of the franchise.

Owens, who would take advantage of the current opening that the Red Sox have on their 40-man roster after adding reliever Ryan Cook to the mix on Sunday, has compiled a 3-8 record to accompany his 3.16 ERA in 122.1 innings of work in Triple-A (Pawtucket) so far this season. The budding young gun has limited opponent batters to a paltry .193 average, while striking out 103 and yielding just 56 walks on the year.
