Jake Arrieta pitched his first no-hitter of his career on Sunday night as the Chicago Cubs snapped their four-game losing streak. This was the sixth no-hitter in the majors this season and 14th in Cubs' history.

"It went by so quick , really. Feels like that could have been five innings the way that played out," Arrieta said during a post game interview. "Kind of speechless right now."

The Cubs got on the board early with a Kris Bryant two-run home run in the first inning. This would end up being the only runs scored in the game, but it was enough for the Cubs to get the win.

In the third inning, Kike Hernandez reached on a fielding error by Starlin Castro that could have easily gone either way. The scoring of the error benefited Arrieta though, keeping the no-hitter alive.

This is what Arrieta had to say about the play:

"I thought it was a hit. Hernandez hit it well. Tough short hop for Castro. They scored it an error, thankfully so, and I was able to finish it off."

Arrieta had another close call in the seventh inning when Carl Crawford hit a line drive up the middle that was caught by Castro on the run.

Arrieta retired all three batters in the ninth via strikeout. His 116th pitch was a breaking ball to Chase Utley that sealed the game for the Cubs. At the end of the night Arrieta had only one walk and 12 strikeouts (one away from his career high).

Arrieta extended his record to 6-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.43 for the month of August. The Cubs haven't had a pitcher with that many wins in a month since Rick Sutcliffe in 1984. He's also only the second pitcher to have six wins in August, the other being Joe Kelly.

The last Cubs' pitcher to throw a no hitter was Carlos Zambrano on September 14, 2008 against Houston

Arrieta is the first Cubs' pitcher to reach 17 wins since 2008 when Ryan Dempster and Ted Lilly both recorded that many wins.

Dodgers' Alex Wood (9-9, 3.67 ERA) gave up 8 hits in six innings, striking out seven and walking only one batter. The Dodgers are still 3.5 games ahead in the NL West after the loss tonight.

What's Next:

On Monday night, the Cubs will be back at home for a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds. Right-hander Kyle Hendricks (6-6, 4.11 ERA) will get the start for the Cubs. Michael Lorenzan (3-8, 5.46 ERA) will start for the Reds.

The Dodgers will open up a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants. Left-hander Brett Anderson (8-8, 3.36 ERA) will match up against Jake Peavy (4-6, 4.21 ERA).
