Brook Lopez has been a cornerstone piece for the Brooklyn Nets the last few years, but the 7 foot big man has been unable to give the Nets a full season due to foot injuries. He played a total of 17 games last season before going down with a season ending injury, fracturing the fifth metatarsal in his right foot.

Lopez has now been cleared to play, according to reports made by Mike Mazzeo of ESPN New York. “I was fully cleared for play and everything about a week and a half ago now,” Lopez told reporters. “Now it’s time to get back in shape.”

With Paul Pierce’s departure, a lot of pressure rests on the shoulders of Lopez. He has been one of Brooklyn’s finest offensive weapons for the past seasons with his efficiency and high point average. He is also a key component on the defensive end.

The Nets certainly missed his size in the paint during last season's playoffs. He could have helped Kevin Garnett on the defensive end and Joe Johnson on the offensive. Therefore, the Nets are going to need him to remain healthy this season.

He is arguably the best player on their roster and at age 26, he still has some room for development. Remember, Deron Williams was brought to the Nets a few years ago to form a dynamic duo with the up and coming Brook Lopez. The Nets sought to make those two the face of the franchise while adding excellent complimentary pieces such as Johnson, Pierce, and Garnett.

Thus, the Nets will go as far as Lopez can take them. During the 2012-13 NBA season, where he lodged 74 games and had one of his best seasons, Lopez was ranked top five in player efficiency rating with a 24.81 PER. That comes to show his importance for the Nets organization.

With the East becoming a much more balanced conference, the Nets will need Brook Lopez to give them a complete season in order for them to compete and become a playoff worthy team. The six-year veteran is definitely a difference maker for the Brooklyn Nets when healthy. Lopez’s expectations are undoubtedly going to be high this upcoming season.
