It has been a horrendous off-season for the Philadelphia 76ers to say the least. They have not signed any costless agents this summer to improve their roster. In fact, they have only made two trades, one of which has significantly unimproved the team.

The first trade they made was a draft day deal where they landed Pierre Jackson, which is a decent move. The 5-foot-10 point guard could score and dish out assists off the bench for Philly.

However, the move that was really mind-boggling was the Thaddeus Young trade. The Sixers were part of the Kevin Love, three-team deal. Philadelphia shipped Young to the Minnesota Timberwolves as part of the trade in exchange for Alexey Shved and Luc Mbah a Moute.

Young had a terrific season for the Philadelphia 76ers, but they wanted to go all out with their rebuilding process and did not want Young to be a part of it, even though he is only 26 years of age and could have been the future veteran leader of these young guys. Thaddeus Young averaged 17.9 points and 6.0 rebounds last season.

Meanwhile, Luc Mbah a Moute is an extremely limited offensive player, but he could provide some perimeter defense, if he could remain healthy. He averaged 3.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game with Minnesota last season. Alexey Shved was falling out of favor in Minnesota and may not see many minutes in Philadelphia as well. However, he is a combo guard with decent play making and ball handling skills.

The Philadelphia 76ers are focusing on their rebuilding project, which is understandable, but was it really necessary to trade Thaddeus Young? Now, the team is left with many non-guaranteed contracts and limited talent. The team’s success now rests on the shoulders of their young prospects Michael Carter-Williams and Nerlens Noel, who has fully recovered from his knee injury, and Joel Embiid once he could fully recover from his own injury.
