Former New York Knick and NBA All-Star Anthony Mason has died at the age of 48, according to reports made by ESPN.

Mason was diagnosed with congestive heart failure earlier in February, and after multiple heart surgeries, he unfortunately passed away Saturday morning.

My heart is heavy after learning we lost Anthony Mason last night. We were teammates on the Knicks for five great seasons,” Patrick Ewing said. “Mase came to play every night and was always ready to go to battle with me every time we stepped on the court together. My thoughts are with his family. May he rest in peace.”

Mason spent five seasons with the Knicks from 1991 to 1996. He also played for the Denver Nuggets, New Jersey Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Miami Heat, and Milwaukee Bucks.

He was selected to his only All-Star game in 2001. He has also won the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award in 1995 and was on the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1997, as well as All-NBA Third Team.

In 13 years in the league, Anthony Mason averaged 10.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game. His former teammates adored his aggressive play and determination for the game.

He was as tough as they come,” Charles Oakley said.

The beauty of Anthony Mason is that he worked himself into becoming an NBA player and an All-Star,” Derek Harper, another one of Mason’s former teammates, said. “I tried to reach out to him this week to tell him I love him. It’s incredibly sad.”

After the NBA world lost Jerome Kersey at age 52, this is another tough death to cope with. Mason leaves behind his two sons, Antoine and Anthony Mason Jr.

First I want to thank all those who offered prayers and well-wishes for my Father, our family really appreciates it,” said Mason Jr. “Overnight, New York City and the world lost a legend, a friend, a brother…but more than anything our father, Anthony Mason. As you all would expect our father – Big Mase – put up an incredible fight, dealing with a severe heart issue. I’m wishing this was something else I was writing, but Pops we’ve got to let you know we love you and know you’ll always be with us.”

It is another sad day in the NBA world. Rest in peace, Anthony Mason.
