Just arrived here to Draddy Gymnasium for Bucknell Bison at Manhattan Jaspers less than half an hour until gametime!

It's gameday!

The Manhattan University Jaspers welcome the Bucknell University Bison to Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, New York on Saturday night. The defending MAAC champion Jaspers come into this game with a record of 0-1 after their 89-63 loss to Saint Mary’s in Moraga, California last Monday. The Bison come into this game with a 2-1 record after losing to Wake Forest in their first game of the season last Sunday and then beat Robert Morris 81-76 a few days ago on Wednesday.

In the loss for the Jaspers, they were powered by former York Prep Panther and current Manhattan senior Shane Richards who had 23 points which was a game high. Manhattan struggled in the first almost ten minutes of the 2nd half against St. Mary as they only scored seven points while the Gaels took advantage and grew their lead.  In the win for the Bison sophomore Zach Thomas powered them with 19 points. These two teams have not played against each other as of 1996-97.

The New York Post reported on Monday that junior Jermaine Lawrence, who transferred to Manhattan from Cincinnati last season, would no longer play for the Jaspers. That came a few days after Lawrence was suspended for half a season after failing a drug test due to weed. Lawrence, after the suspension, withdrew from the school.

The key players for the Jaspers are senior Shane Richards and Rich Williams who are two of the Manhattan leaders this season. Richards is the best three point shooter in Manhattan Jaspers history as he set the record last season for most three points in a career. Richards hit three 3s on four attempts in the last game. Manhattan needs “Suga” Shane to take more threes against the Bison and hit them for them to win this game. Richards was a preseason pick for All MAAC 2nd team. Williams is a junior this season and has consistently been one of the Jaspers best options off the bench. He had 16 points, seven rebounds, and 4-11 shooting in the loss. He needs to shoot the ball better in this one for the Jaspers to get the win and continue to make an impact when Jaspers Head Coach Steve Masiello calls upon him. In his career, Williams is averaging 5.2 points per game and a paltry 0.7 threes per game. Williams needs to come into this game at what could be a critical time for the Jaspers and make an immediate impact on both ends of the floor. For the Jaspers to win they have to get impacts out of Shane Richards and Rich Williams.

The key players for the Bucknell Bison are sophomore Zach Thomas and senior Chris Hass. Thomas led the Bison to the win on Wednesday with 19 points, six rebounds and perfect from the free throw line, five for five. He only took one three against Robert Morris and missed the shot. To help the Bison get to 3-1, Thomas needs to play really well by forcing his way to the line and hitting his shots when he gets them inside. Hass has already scored 62 points in three games this season and played well against Robert Morris getting 18 points, with three rebounds, and three assists. Hass is going to be really big in this game for the Bison on both sides of the ball, he’s not a star but he’s a very good player who is good on both sides of the ball. For the Bison to win they need impacts on both sides of the ball from Chris Hass and Zach Thomas.

The keys to the game for the Manhattan Jaspers are to hold onto the ball and more consistently hit their shots. The Jaspers had 16 turnovers in their loss, so for them to win this game they need to hold onto the ball more so they can get good opportunities. In the loss to St. Mary’s their field goal percentage was only 38.1% to beat a pretty good Bucknell team they have to more consistently hit their shots, especially in the paint. The Jaspers had zero blocks in their last game so they need to change that in this game and block some Bison shots.

The keys to the game for the Bison is the same as the Jaspers, don’t turn the ball over and hit the three ball better than they did in the last game. In Bucknell’s last game they had 18 turnovers and still managed to take down the Robert Morris Colonials. Manhattan is a much better team than Robert Morris, so the Bison can’t expect to win this game turning the ball over so much. They only hit the three at a 38.1% clip last game; if they want to win they have to hit the shot from behind the arch more.

What the Manhattan Jaspers have to do in order to get their first win of the season in their home opener is avoid mistakes. Mistakes such as getting in foul trouble sending the Bison to the free throw line and get the easy baskets in the paint that the Bison will give them. What the Bison have to do in order to improve to 3-1 is get to the free throw line and force turnovers.

The Bucknell Bison are 2-1 on the season and will travel to Riverdale, NY in this one for a matchup with the Manhattan Jaspers who are 0-1 on the season.
