Saturday was the annual Orange vs. white game for the Vols ending spring practice. It was a game that as a scoring system few could truly understand, so it takes a look into individual stats to truly understand what was seen. There were a few major storylines to take away from the practice. The attendance was roughly 67,000 for this game.

Josh Malone is everything Vols fans hoped for. From the outset Josh Malone didn't look like a true freshmen. He exploded with six catches for 181 yards and 3 TD's. He blew past star corner Cameron Sutton for one huge 40+ yard score. He was electric. He was fast. He is a star in the making.

There were a few other notable players that played well. Jalen Hurd was the best rusher for the Vols. He didn't break one for any huge gains, but he played a good overall game. Coming off shoulder surgery his senior year of high school, Vol fans got to see their future star running back. Tight end and also true freshman Ethan Wolfe was a quiet star of the night. He was consistent and came up big. TE's don't get as much love as a receiver but they are pivitol. With the revamped offensive line the Vols need good play at TE. Von Pearson also looked great. Everytime he had the ball it looked as if he could go all the way. Reeves-Maybin had a good game on defense and Jakob Johnson is an interesting prospect for the future. Curt Maggitt had a sack and looked like he could be back in his peak form after missing all of last year with an ACL injury.

Now for the down sides. The offensive line did not run block well. The running game did alright but that was more due to good running instead of good blocking. The punting was inconsistent, with a sub 40 yard punt to start out. It ended well but it needs to become more consistent in the effort to replace place kicker and punter Michael Palardy. The secondary was downright bad. They looked slow all day and did not cover well. An influx of talent is coming in during the fall and after today it looks like there is a lot of playing time to be had.

The quarterback position has been the most talked about all spring. All four QB's did well. Worley was arguably the best staying poised and consistent all game long. Dobbs had a great scramble on a broken play for a 59 yard rushing TD, as well as some great passes including a bomb he threw for a long TD. Peterman stepped up to have another consistent game. Ferguson struggled early on and faced a lot of pressure and made some poor descisions. He ended with a TD drive to redeem his night but after having the most press around him and many believing he was due for the job this was a bad performance for him.

Overall the offense was night and day different from last year. The passing attack looked absolutely dominant. Whether that was because of the offenses talent or the defenses lackthereof is yet to be seen. All things considered it was a great day on Rocky Top.
