Navy linebacker Maika Polamalu has been forced to retire due to injuries. Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo confirmed the news on Thursday. Polamalu was expected to vie for a starting linebacker spot this year.

Polamalu has suffered from concussions in the past, but Niumatalolo said that is not the reason why Polamalu is retiring. Niumatalolo did not disclose the exact reason for Polamalu's retirement. Polamalu will remain with the team as a student assistant coach.

Maika Polamalu is the cousin of the Pittsburgh Steelers' safety Troy Polamalu.

Maika Polamalu played in 9 games during the 2012 season. He played at fullback during that year, finishing with 39 yards and 1 touchdown on 6 rushes. Polamalu switched over to linebacker for the 2013 season where he played in 4 games. He recorded 1 tackle on the year, which came against Delaware.

Polamalu was listed second on the depth chart at one of the inside linebacker spots. James Britton, Don Pearson, Jordan Drake, Daniel Gonzales, and Tyler Goble are all battling for the starting roles at the two inside linebacker spots.
