At least the old veteran was being honest. That's the best thing that this writer can take from this crazy situation coming out of New York City.

In this past off-season, Michael Vick signed a one year, $5 million contract to be the backup quarterback of the New York Jets. He had originally stated that he was wanting to mentor Geno Smith. Well, after Smith missed a team meeting on Saturday, he was the first man onto the field in San Diego on Sunday. Despite all the chaos and the demands that were being placed on Vick, he played miserably. Completing a grand total of 8 passes on 19 attempts for 47 yards. He also had 2 rushes for a total of 14 yards. Vick just looked pathetic on the field. The reason why appears to have come out in the media this week.

Here are some comments from Wednesday's New York Post: “Maybe I didn’t prepare or I wasn’t prepared, but I’ll tell you what, it won’t happen again,” Vick said. “I learned a lesson last week: always stay ready, always be prepared,” Vick said. “That left a bitter taste in my mouth that I wasn’t able to go out and put points on the board or even help this team in any fashion. So this week has been a different work week from me [and] throughout the rest of the year, it’s going to be totally different for me as far as my preparation.”

There is no excuse for actions like this from someone who has been considered a threat to replace Geno Smith as a starter all season. There is no excuse for comments like this from other veteran quarterbacks like Matthew Hasselbeck of the Colts or Brandon Weeden of the Cowboys. If Johnny Manziel was making a comment like this, then everyone would have torn it to smithereens. But it seems like Vick is getting a bit of a costless pass on this one, which is inexcusable. They will host the Denver Broncos this week, so hopefully Vick has learned his lesson and will actually prepare for some game action this week.
