World Challenge: Lewis Tops Second GT/GTA/GT Cup Sonoma Practice

Michael Lewis went quickest in Friday's second 30-minute session for the GT, GTA and GT Cup classes at Sonoma Raceway.

The GT, GTA and GT Cup classes took to Sonoma Raceway for their second 30-minute practice session of the weekend on Friday. Topping the session was Michael Lewis, at the wheel of the No. 41 EFFORT Racing entry, while Frankie Montecalvo and Alec Udell topped that GTA and GT Cup categories, respectively, as they did in Practice 1 for the three classes.

Early on in the session, which was run under 82 degree temperatures and clear skies, it was Johnny O'Connell in the No. 3 Cadillac Racing Cadillac ATS-VR GT3 at the top with a lap of 1:35.328. Soonafter, Renger van der Zande, at the wheel of the No. 31 EFFORT Porsche 911 GT3R, bested O'Connell's time with a 1:35.047. Guy Smith then put the No. 20 Bentley Team Dyson Racing Bentley Continental GT3 at the top with a lap of 1:34.898.

Mike Hedlund, driver of the No. 65 Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 458 GT3 Italia, posted the fastest time for the GTA category early on in the 30-minute practice session with a 1:35.467. In GT Cup, it was the No. 11 Porsche of Bucks County entry of Colin Thompson at the top with a 1:39.936.

Just past the halfway point of the session, James Davison put the No. 33 AE Replay XD Nissan GT Academy Nissan at the top. His teammate Bryan Heitkotter of the No. 05 AE Replay XC Nissan GT Academy car then slotted himself right behind Davison with a lap of 1:34.706.

Martin Fuentes topped GTA in the No. 07 Scuderia Ferrari, then Guy Smith went to the top in GT.

Twenty-two minutes in, van der Zande put the No. 31 EFFORT Porsche on top of the timesheets. Montecalvo then slotted into second overall and first in GTA with a 1:34.148.

In GT Cup, Udell posted the fastest lap at this time, a 1:39.254.

At the very end of the session, Lewis finally went to the top overall with a 1:33.652.

Next up for the GT, GTA and GT Cup classes is qualifying for GT/GTA Round 18 and GT Cup Round 16, set for 2:30 pm ET on Saturday.
