The race began with Jorge Lorenzo leading the way, but immediately Valentino Rossi and Marc Márquez escaped from the Movistar Yamaha rider at the front.

Marquez continued to chase behind the Italian, but eventually crashed out at Turn 1 with only a handful of laps remaining, taking him right out of the hunt for his third consecutive premier class title.

This helped Danilo Petrucci of Octo Pramac Racing to catapult into second position. After battling the final few laps with the Ducati Team rider of Andrea Dovizioso, Petrucci was able to hold onto second position to earn his first career podium finish in the premier class. His result aboard the Pramac Ducati is remarkable considering he started 18th.

Dovizioso, finishing third, earned his second podium of the year, but completed an all-Italian podium with Rossi and Petrucci ahead of him.

Finishing just off the podium was Lorenzo followed by Dani Pedrosa of Repsol Honda and Scott Redding of EG 0,0 Marc VDS in sixth. The local hero, Redding, who is joining Pramac next season, achieved his best result of his MotoGP career after several seventh place finishes earlier this season.

Rounding out the top-10 was Bradley Smith of Monster Yamaha Tech 3 in seventh, Andrea Iannone of Ducati in eighth, and Aleix Espargaro of Team Suzuki ECSTAR and Alvaro Bautista of Aprilia Racing Team Gresini in ninth and 10th.

This premier class race saw plenty of crashes. Jack Miller couldn't get his Honda slowed down in time at a braking zone, causing him and his LCR Honda teammate Cal Crutchlow to crash out and forcing Miller to retire; Crutchlow crashed again soonafter ad retired from the race then. Pol Espargaro and Stefan Bradl of Tech 3 and Gresini also crashed out.

Rossi heads to his home race at San Marino in Italy September 13 with a 12-point lead over Lorenzo in the championship. Marquez is now 75 points behind Rossi.
