Burnley have announced their first summer signing with the arrival of Scott Twine from MK Dons.

The attacking midfielder has signed a four year deal with The Clarets and joins Vincent Kompany’s side for an undisclosed fee thought to be around £4 million.

Twine had joined The Dons last summer from Swindon Town and scored 20 goals to go along with his 13 assists at Stadium:MK last season.

Twine, 22, started his career at Southampton, joining their academy as a teenager before returning to his home-town side Swindon in 2016.

He went on to make 59 appearances at the County Ground along with a number of loan spells, including a particularly successful one at Newport County, before leaving at the end of his contract last summer.

He signed for the Buckinghamshire side and quickly solidified himself in the side, becoming a fan favourite.

Twine’s ability to create chances for himself and others was the best-bar-none in League One last season, being named the division’s Player of the Year.

He can go left or right with ease, a quality Burnley have been searching for over the past few years.

His best attribute is his dead ball ability – whether that be crossing situations or going for goal himself – which will be a big benefit to a side that has been renowned for it’s strength in the air in the past.

However, they have been and will be under Kompany more than just a set piece team, and Twine’s technical ability will be a welcomed addition.

  • Where will he fit?

With the departures of many first team players, squad depth is very much required and Twine’s adaptability to play across the midfield or behind the strikers is very important.

Yet, with former Manchester City captain Kompany favouring a 4-4-2 formation in his time at Anderlecht, Twine will most likely operate as the more attacking central midfield option.

Another option would be for him to act as a second striker, dropping deep to get on the ball and provide for the striker in front of him.

This would allow Josh Brownhill and Jack Cork to both play behind him and form a solid partnership in the middle of the park.

He will take some time to get up to speed with the Championship, it is a big step up from the third tier.

But, Twine has all the tools to stand out and be a major player in Burnley’s promotion push this season.

  • What the club has said about Twine’s arrival

Kompany was happy to get the deal done, giving Twine a full pre-season with The Clarets.

“We are delighted to have brought Scott to the club,” Kompany told the club’s website.

“He’s an exciting young player that will help us in the short-term process and in the long-term project at Burnley Football Club.

“He’s a player we have looked at for a little while now, we know he can score goals and affect games. We’re glad to welcome him to the squad.”

Twine himself added: “I am buzzing. I have definitely made the right decision joining Burnley.

“I spoke in depth with the manager and his plans are exciting, it was a no brainer for me to sign.

“I can’t wait to get started and it feels like the right place for me.”

Twine could make his debut in the opening Championship game of the season, away at Huddersfield Town on July 29.
